Hello all

Just interested in your thoughts and experiences as my brain in times of panic has deserted me :(

My little 3.5 year old girl is really suffering. She got a UTI on Monday and was immediately treated with 1.1ml per day of Septrin and quarter of a tablet of Rimadyl. She was passing a lot of blood but not in much pain however after no improvement she went to the vet again on Thursday where we found an ovarian cyst so she had chorulon. Her bleeding has now all but stopped however she is now in considerable pain, arching her back and peeing every 5-10 mins.

I have spoken to the emergency vet and I cannot up the rimadyl. the vet is not cavy savvy and I am concerned that if its a baldderstone she could not be operated on until Monday anyway (I would only let my guinea vet do this).

My vet gave me some Baytril to try if she did not respond to the Septrin over the weekend but as the bleeding has stopped I am not sure whether or not to switch to the Baytril, maybe the Septrin is working? I can switch in the morning if I need to according to the emergency vet. They have said I can bring her in but what else can they do? They cannot operate and with the Rimadyl I guess there is little more pain relief she can have?

She is eating and drinking at the moment and very feisty but I am just at a loss what the best thing to do is other than whiz her to the vets Monday morning when she can see my great cavy savvy vet....

Sorry for the rambling thread :(

I should also add that she is on cystease and the vet did feel her bladder for stones and thought she was OK....but I will ask for an xray.

I have pm'ed you but in all honesty I would stick with the Septrin and wait till Monday, I only say this as she is a girl and if she does have a stone it is less likely to block her urethra, of course if she stops urinating you must seek vet attention ASAP.

Yes I guess thats where my head is at in all honesty just need someone to agree with me toput my mind at rest! Have pm'd you..

How long has she been on the septrin? If there's no blood any more then it's likely to be doing something. Changing antibiotic courses after short periods of time can result in nasty abx resistant bacteria so id stick with the septrin a while longer.

Are you giving extra fluids? I think this helped cameo most with her cystitis!

Whee would just like to send some healing and loving wheeeeeeks for your little girl XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

One of the worst parts is hearing and seeing them in pain :(
Extra water does help whee use that for our Velvet.

Hi All

Thank you for your replies and particularly Flintstones who was a wonderful help last night. Where would we be without our forum friends? THANK you THANK you.

She is a little better, still no blood, she pooped with no pain at all (how could I get that excited over a poop!)rolleyes

She is still wimpering when she pees but it is less and although she is sometimes arching her back, its not as much and not everytime so perhaps patience is a virtue? She was the first to her breakfast this morning and jumping on and off their igloos so I am assuming she feels a lot lot better ....lets hope it lasts...keeping a close vigil.

Re the extra fluids...I have tried and tried and she savages me, the syringe, my clothes the lot! It stresses her out so much. I am used to syringing guineas (sadly) but she is one of the worse..so thats 'work in progress' :(

THANK YOU AGAIN for everyones help.

She has been on Septrin a week now..I do agree with you though so will keep trying. Thank you!

We've all got excited over a poop at one point or another :))

As for extra fluids - I got some pureed fruit, watered it down and offered it in a bowl for Cameo - just as something different - she loved it! I found the pouches of baby food (check the ingredients - there are ones from Ella's Garden range that contain only fruit and/or vegetables) that contained banana or strawberry were a hit - nice and smelly and tasty!

I'll try the baby food, good idea although knowing her she won't like that either! She is so fussy...she likes piggy food and thats it according to her. If you could get grass flavoured juice then that would be alright :{

She is OK this morning, still wheeking and hunching so just waiting for the vet to call back..to be honest I just want her re-examined and possibly xrayed and then I can either panic if its a stone or relax and just continue treating if its not...... I lost a little girl to a bladderstone op last year, almost to the day :(

We have everything crossed here - have you tried Pearl Barley?

Is your vet good for getting an appointment on the same day? X

Sadly my local store did not have any yesterday but my parents are off shopping today while I am working and they are getting me some. I cannot believe I threw it away only the other day...it was very old though.

Re the vets, she is great and if she thinks she needs to be seen then she will fit her in somehow. I am working from home today so that I can pop her over when we have spoken. She is very perky and eating and drinking normally and doing her usually climbing on things and jumping off so clearly she is not feeling too bad! I just need to get her checked out for my own peace of mind if nothing else .....

All paws and fingers crossed, let us know how she gets on x

Spoke to my lovely vet and she recommends we continue as we are with the Septrin as she is improving all bit it slowly. She is then booked in for Thursday where we will probably xray her and do anything else necessary depending on how we are at that time. Gives the Septrin a little longer to work as well. Will keep you posted ...

Bad news. Rushed Molly in this morning as an emergency as she was in agony, off food and not peeing. She has a large stone which she has tried to pass and has got well and truly stuck so she is in a very bad way.

They will try to manipulate it out but it is right in the middle of the pelvis. If not then they will have to push back in and open up her bladder.

Utterly gutted, poor girl looked so miserable this morning and just wanted cuddles, she kept climbing up to be on me. I feel so so awful.

She is being operated on shortly so please send massive healing vibes, she is so lovely she deserves to come through it.

I lost one of my girls to exactly the same thing this time last year she never really recovered from the op so I am very very nervous...

Oh no, really sorry to read this, hope everything will go well. Thinking of her and you x x

Aw hun I'm so sorry. Have everything crossed for here, will be thinking of you both x

Thank you all of you...she was having her op at 11.30...still waiting to hear...torture :(

Oh God, am keeping everything crossed. Really hope she's ok.

Rang the vets in the end as not heard anything and she has just finished the op. No idea how big an op it was in the end as the vet was consulting but she was just being brought round. Picking her up at six o clock so I'll know more but at least she's made it this far.....I guess the hard work starts now :))

I will keep you posted.

I've only just caught up with this :(
My boar Harley, had a huge stone in June and seeing him suffer broke my heart, I cried constantly and never left his side day or night as he was so poorly :0, took time off work as I was afraid to leave him.
Know exactly how you are feeling atm hun :(
Harley pulled through his op and was chasing his brother around the next morning :{
Sending your little one lots of gentle hugs and wheeky healing vibes for a speedy recovery x>>

Not a good update

She is home but very very poorly. the stone was large and lodged halfway and firmly into her urethra. So it took two vets nearly two hours working outside in (don't even think about it :{) and inside out. She has a huge incision in her belly. She is nibbling on lettuce and thats it. I am about to syringe feed her but the prognosis is not good. Sadly my vet says there is only a small chance she will make it but we'll see. I have another who had something similar but got through so we'll see what we can do.

I'll be sleeping on the sofa with her tonight though. Fortunately I am off work tomorrow. The guinea shed is eerily quiet as the others seem to know something is very seriously amiss :( I have a very heavy heart tonight.

Aww the poor sweetheart! Ive just read it all and it felt so good that she was recovering slowly and then suddenly rushed to vets.

I hope she pulls through, hopefully she will! Lots of love from me and passing many many healing vibes!

Given what she has gone through...then nibbling lettuce tonight is a good sign.

Be prepared to support her with syringe feeding and gut stimulants over the weekend (so weigh daily and keep an eye out for small poos..and buy some human zantac in the antacids section from the supermarket this weekend) ). Also keep an eye on the wound for possible signs of post-op infection.

With the weekend coming up make sure you have emergency vet number and sufficient meds to get her through til monday.

I assume she had an X ray today? Did they check the kidneys and ureters were clear?

Fingrs and paws here are all crossed...if you want a chat then PM me for my phone number.

Whre are you based?

x

Thank you Pebble :-)

She is seeing the vet again tomorrow afternoon for a post op check and i do have the emergency out of hours number as well. I have enough meds to take out shares in a pharmaceutical company including Fibreplex which she has had 1 ml of so far to get her gut going. She is on Baytril, probiotics, and rimadyl for pain. No poops yet but I have to be patient.

She has nibbled some hay (I mean about 5 blades but she has eaten those five blades!), she seems to like only lettuce..but thats fine. I have probably in the last 3 hours got about 15 ml of critical care in her. I don't want to overload her system too much so just doing a very small mount at a time which she seems to be fine with.

All in all, I think she is more depressed than anything. She is not hunched, she is not wheeking in pain much (just when I handle her) and she LOVES it when i hold her in my arms (probably because I am warm?) she just goes off to sleep. She has a heat pad in her indoor cage as well though. She is also quite feisty particularly when she says she's had enough food!

Curious about the Zantac, how would I know if she needs this? Not used an antacid before? will get some tomorrow but just wary of bombarding her system with too much stuff?

Other than that, whilst she is sniffing other food she is not showing any interest but I am guessing its early days. I will be staying with her all night so will let you know how she goes. Poor lass.

Really appreciate your advice. thank you x
