No poos yet means she now really needs a gut stimulant in addition to syring feeding. 24 hours no poos becomes an emergency situation.

Metoclopromide is given by most vets if the gut stops or is in danger of stopping (although the preferred drug cisapride is also now back on the market having been withdrawn since 2000 but not many vets know that yet). However this just stimluates the stomach emptying. Zantac stimulates the hind gut so most cavy savvy vets now prescribe both. You should at least get some metoclorpomide tomorrow for any weekend emergencies. (and get your own zantac). It is not unusual to need gut stimulants after an op of this nature.

You are back to the vets tomorow (friday) so make sure you cover all eventualities for the weekend...and they give you the meds. An injection tomorrow would not be enough - you really need oral meds to last you through the weekend.

Given you are in Basingstoke, I am relatively close to you ...will Pm you.

Thanks Pebble My apptmt is 5.15 tomorrow if she has not passed anything by then (or before then) then should I ask about this? They have not mentioned it and I thought the Fibreplex was a gut stimulant? Panicking now :-(

I will call them tomorrow morning and mention your advice. Is the drug you mention by injection, oral or both options? Will get Zantac first thing as well, would you just administer Zantac anyway ? If so..how much would you give her? She weighs 1.18g.

Hi Hun

a) DON;T PANIC!..just monitor poo output and keep syringe feeding if she isn;t eating

:( Just caught up with this thread!

I hope she's better this morning *everything crossed*

Thank you all. She is still here so thats good! I spent all night with her and she slept on my arm for much of it. This morning she has eaten 5 dandelion leaves, some grass, lettuce and last night a load of dill. She's also had critical care and she pee'd nice a clear with no sign of pain or discomfort this morning.

She is very tired and quiet but thats not surprising.

Just waiting for that first poop and then I will relax. Off to the vets later to get her checked again so things are OK......

Keep sending those healing vibes!

Saddest thing is that my usual noisey shed is so quiet today, they are all really sad that she is not in there :( Just makes you realise what a family unit they are.

Only just caught up with the thread, hope she is feeling little better this morning, sending vibes her way... x

Pebble has given you fantastic advice - it's good to have people like this on hand who have lots of experience.
We gave Harley Critical Care syringed, Fibreplex and Dioralyte as he had severe diarrhoea for days. He would only eat tiny bits of fresh grass too but anything was better than nothing. Metacam was a great analgesia, we increased his dose as he was screaming with pain 8...upon the advice of experienced members on this forum and I spoke to my vet the next morning who agreed.
When I look at the chubby little guy now, it's hard to imagine he had lost that much weight and was giving up, he couldn't hold his head up - truly destroyed me to see my boy like that (still get upset thinking about it :( ) To see his first 'normal' poo in weeks, had me and OH in tears :) as we knew we were winning the fight to save him.
Am thinking of you and your little girl, these stones are a real pain in the ass pow-pow
Hope the little sweetie is up and about really soon, sending more gentle hugs x>>

Just been on the phone to Pebbles....she is fabulous!

I do not know what I owould do without some of the members on this forum to keep me sane...thank you so much.

Thanks for your encouraging words, I am hoping that having made it this far we will be getting there. I will keep you posted :))

Aw hun, just caught up. I am really sorry she is so poorly. Sending healing wheeks, really hope she gets better soon. ((hugs)) xx

Well she's passed some small poops (I never thought I'd be so pleased to see a poop!) and she is eating grass but unhappy about other food so syringing at the moment every few hours. She nibbles at the hay but not really eating it. She fell sound asleep in my arms earlier, completely stretched and flat out so hope thats a good sign.

Will keep you posted...keep the healing vibes coming I think they may be working x>>

Hi All

Been up all night two nights in a row now feeding her 2 hourly. She is not as bad as some I have seen...i.e not hunched up, hair is mainly flat. With the help of some gut stimulant she is pooping little perfect poops (tiny but poops none the less!) and peeing. She is weak though and very tired. She just spends all the time in the corner of her cage curled up but she is not facing the wall, she is watching whats going on. She does love cuddles though which she is getting lots of.

She is getting 15ml of Critical care every two hours but I am wondering if this is just filling her up too much as she does not want to eat anything. She was nibbling on hay and lettuce etc but thats stopped now and she will just nibble on some grass thats it. I will chop up some tiny bits of food and place them in her mouth later. I will try some grated carrot too but just wondering if anyone has any other ideas on how to get their appetite back?

I am also wondering whether to put one of the quieter guineas in with her for a while, she may just be missing guinea company? I had'nt so far as she is so sore and has a lot of stitches but just trying to think of anything I can do to get her stimulated.

Pebbles and Flinstones have been a godsend thank you! Just wondering if there are any further ideas? Desperate and trying not too let negative thoughts rule my brain :(

Hiya

It will take a few days given what she's been through. She was under anaesthetic for quite some time and as you say now has quite a substantial wound so her apetite won;t be up to much. Just keep giving the grass and enough CC to keep the guts moving and monitor her weight/poop output.

Have sent you an email...

Thank you Pebbles..pm'd you back. Now refusing to eat absolutely anything :( I am loathed to keep syringing her as I think this is bringing her down. She hates it. She actually looks perky, she just refuses to eat :(

Know how you feel with the syringing, I felt lousy having to keep pumping Harley with it but knew it had to be done to keep him going. I just did small and often. Don't expect too much of your girl too soon, as Pebbles said, she has been through a huge ordeal :(
Lots of hugs coming your way again x>>

She needs food to get though this and syringing is the only way if she's refusing it :(!

Keep up the good work, she will thank you soon. x

Thank you all!

After speaking to the lovely Pebbles and another friend who is a rodentologist I syringed her all evening (little and often) until 11.30 last night with mushed up food pellets. She seemed to be OK with this...not exactly pleased but I did not have to prise her jaws open and she did'nt spit it out!

Then we decided to give her a complete break overnight with nothing other than hay and titbits to keep her company. Well this morning I have weighed her and she has lost just 1 gram. She is pooping perfect little minipoops (tiny but perfectly formed and she has eaten one as well) and she has eaten some lettuce, dill and celery leaves. Not a lot but enough to mean she did'nt have to be syringed first thing (after I told her this she deemed this to be the better option) . She was bright and perky and vocal....I know we are a LONG way from better but I do hope this is a good sign. rolleyes

She is with her boyfriend who has been fabulous at keeping her company but she won't let him near her igloo! You should hear her if he even gets close!

Thanks again for all the advice and support, and Molly sends a little wheek to say thank you too and she is doing her best now to get better x)

Aw hun I'm so pleased to hear that, thats really great. Your doing a fab job with her, come on Molly you can do it xx

So far so good....she is still eating..at her own pace and supplemented with some Fibreplex and mushed up pellets but I think we are turning the corner slowly and surely...x

Really happy to hear this...it's all sounding really positive for Molly (bless her little stubborn socks!)

Errm..... is it too much to hope that you too get a good night's sleep?!

Hugs
xxxxx

Just saw this thread, I'm so sorry I missed all of this, ignore my pm - I've just been so wrapped up in Bertie. I am really pleased to see that she is recovering. What a horrible time for you! All good wishes and love to you and Molly. x

Thank you everyone for your kind messages. The Guinea Pig Forum healing vibes must be awesome as she is getting better daily. She is holding her weight, starting to eat hay and just very perky and talkative. Threatened to jump off the sofa last night! And yes I have had a whole nights sleep...one whole night!

All in all very happy with her. Check up with the vet tomorrow and then I'll get an xray done in two weeks to check how things are going...but at least we can plan/think ahead now.

Sappho...poor Bertie I have just read your pm...sending love and healing vibes back...will pm you later.

will keep you updated but feel I can breath again now! xxxxx

Thanks Saysie.....I am so proud of her :)) Just hope she continues to improve, it all seems to be to good to be true......keep sending those vibes x)

She is a tough little girl and very very stubborn. I was talking to Pebbles at the weekend and explaining that half her problem with the recovery was that she was fed up with syringe feeding and psychologically just switched off and she is just so so stubborn nothing was going to convince her. Physically, whilst sore she did'nt loo too bad, it was more mental.

Putting her 'boyfriend' in with her and giving her a break for 6 hours just seems to have turned her around. Just shows that you have to allow for the psychological trauma as well as the physical, its something so easy to forget sometimes.

My husband summed it up, if she was a human she would have been counselled as to what was happening and how she would feel. From her guinea perspective she knows she went in, in agony from a blocked, swollen bladder and came out with a different sort of agony and she has no idea why? Then she was on her own with her mum force feeding food into what was a very sore internal system and I guess she felt life was'nt worth living :(

She is a little monkey and has that 'look' which basically says 'bog off' when she's not happy. Such a little character x) I will sort out a photobucket soon and post some piccies of her.

xx

Sadly my poor girl has gone downhill again.

She is eating a little supplemented by syringing. She has lost a little weight but the most concerning thing is that her UTI has come back and it seems resistant to the antibiotics. Currently a sample is in the labs and I am just anxiously awaiting the results so we can get her on the right antibiotics. Its so unfair as she was really perking up. She is also in a lot of pain from her op but we are starting to manage that, we just need this infection sorted.

Please send healing vibes I don't think I could bear it if we lost her after getting this far and we seem to be a long way off 8...

Oh no! So sorry to read this! Sending healing wheeks and vibes xx
