Just what is wrong with wanting our piggies and other animals to have the best life?

i mean today i went to pets at home to pick some timothy hay up (for the first time) and i got some guinea pig excal (orange bag) as there have ate all the last stuff in the orange bag i gave them lilly and max and the babies love them so i got anther bag the big 4kg bag and i aslo picked up some pets at home nuggets up to see if there like them as i think there will my mum says I'm mad sh says i speed too much on them

i mean i got the excal stuff and pets at home nuggots as there ar egood for the guinea pigs unlike gerty so i got them to mix in with gerty because it will be mote healty for them

i also got one of them bruches to clean the water bottlies out with - so there can have nice clean bottlies all the time

i mena today i speent about £40 on them as i got there weekly veg and then i got the hay and the 2 bags of food and the bruch thingy

i mean i wont need to buy any exal or nuggots for anout 6months now or so as it took them 3 and half month to eat a small bag of excal i got them and i got them a bigger bag and nuggots this time and i wont need no gery for another month as i have 2 bags in my room not open yet i means it not like I'm buying this stuff every week

the only thing i get weekly is the hay and the veg i get the dry food when i need it i mean these are stuff there need

and my dad said isnt it unhealthy to have the bags of dry food in my room ( i put it in big tubs what what dont fit in i put under my bed untill the tubs need filling up again) i mean whats more healthy to you lot

1) in my room where its nice and clean

2) my dads shed where there will be mice
?

i just wont to do the best for my guinea pigs i love them so much i have never asked for them to pay for anything for them i clean them out and feed them myself i pay for everything with my own money

Forgive me if I am wrong, but 3 and a half months to eat a small (2kg?) of excel for 8 piggies?

Now you have about 12 kg and you say that will last you 6 months?

:-\ ?

I'm slightly confused to be honest. I have five piggies on the Excel mix and a 3kg bag (the special offer) and it lasts about 2 weeks or so roughly?

its hard to explain to parents who arent has 'keen' on pets at you that your animal needs the best. my dad is a little understanding, but my mum was terrible. she wouldnt let my pets go to the vets or nothing. i live with my dad now, and whenever piggy stuff calls he takes me straight to the shop or vets to sort it out. which is good. but some parents are less understanding like my mum.  :-\ i can see why i hate her so much! because of her Coco is not here today, because she saidd coco was pefectly fine where the poor thing couldnt breathe, and my dad had no money (spent all money sending divorce applications to my mum which take up his wages) so instead she bought an expensive bottle of wine (which probably cost more than the vets) and went and got drunk with her mates!  :tickedoff:

It's tough being a mum too. I am a parent and also love my guineas so I can see both points of view. There is no way in this world I could justify spending £40 on my guinea pigs. Seriously I just couldn't. Even if it is your own money it hurts to have that money go on something like that when you know you have financial worries or you have just had to puill £100 for the car or someother unexpected pullout.

When I say 'something like that' I mean the sheer volume of stuff you have bought. I want the very best for my guineas too but don't spend anywhere near that because I have to buy little and often. That way I don't feel like I've deprived my little girl out of treats and clothes that the money could have been spent on. I'm not making myself very clear here but I just wanted to give it toyou from a parents point of view. Most parents have to budget. To think that I will have to pull out money for pocket money, school lunches, treat money for weekend trips into town, new scholl shoes, new trainers or coat, trip money for school, trips out with the family weekends, petrol to take you to school.. FLIPPIN' Heck! I got all that to come - go easy on your parents.. cos it's a tough job

I still don't understand. Surely this isn't right?

I mean I have 14 piggies, and they can go through 5kg in a week (maybe more, maybe a bit less) - 20kgs in about a month - where you say that half that amount will feed your 8 piggies for 6 months?!

Well it's ok for me as i'm not a parent, i don't have much money on JSA while job searching which is tiring but when i get my money apart from special occasions, i either spend it on myself or my pets and i prefer spending it on my pets. It's quite pricey with 5 rabbits, 4 hamsters, 2 gerbils and a guinea pig to look after but i have never minded the money i fork out for them and i'm lucky with my mam she tends to buy a few treats here and there if i have no money.

I normally have to spend a lot on this:
4kg or maybe 6kg of rabbit excel
5 bales of lunun hay (this lasts much longer than the moth though)
4 bags of hamster bedding
about 4 to 5 small bags of swadust
4 15litre bags of wood based litter for 4 rabbits
around 2 to 3 bags of straw (russel now used to be supreme barley straw)
1kg of hamster food lasts longer since they don't eat much
Hamsters get a small variety of treats every few weeks considting of:
yougurt drops
chcolate drops
yippee treats
chcolate raisons
hoops
donuts
treat sticks
fruit pieces
some grass product
and a few other things i can't remember
Egg biscuits for rabbits
and now add on excel guinea pig food, just bought 3kg on special
and the veg is usually the most expensive as theres so much
and anything else i need, spare bowls, bottles and toys.

I buy it in big bulks and store it so i don't get things every week, food is bought more and bedding bought in so many numbers to last around the month and 1/2 so not to run out when i need it, apart from the odd bits like treats and hay the rest is bought every month where as treats last up to months as they get a small selection every few weeks. Seems alot but well it's my money and it's how i want to spend it, lets say my dad is less than understanding ::)

My 5 pigs go through about 2kg in about 2 weeks.
1 handfull morning and night for the two girls,
2 handfulls morning and night for the other 3 pigs.

i have 9 guineas and 5 rabbits.

monthly i get through (approx.) 6 large bags hay, 1x10kg guinea excel, 1x10kg rabbit excel, 1 sack megazorb.

weekly i buy - 1 cucumber, 1 doz tomatoes, 4 bananas, 1 bag pears, 2 bags greens, 1 bag kale, 1 celery

Plus occasional treats like: alfalfa, strawberries, timothy hay etc.

don't know how much it costs i haven't worked it out but i consider this (apart from the treats) to be their basic requirements.

ok, but still about 12kg in food total for the whole of 6 months is what I am trying to get at and understand :)

My lot go through at least 20kg (give-or-take exactly) a month PLUS the large (5kg?) of P@H nuggets that I sometimes mix in.

That make sense?

Adding to all my pet needs - I pay all of the vet fees and medication, mum often goes halves with me on the fresh and dried foods. Toys and treats are bought by me.

Take it in turns for the hay.

As for the other payments - at least £700 has to go on 'living' expenses

My mum buys a bale of hay for me when we need it, she also buys the fresh food and the dry food ;D
My lot would go through 1 and a half buckets of mix and pellets in about 2-3 months...

£700, and the rest! :o We pay that in rent/mortgage a month. Bloody taxes take most of the left over money. ::)

Ooh, there's an idea. Prob 2 mansions as we'll need plenty of room for those piggies. Expecially if Sars and Shaz want to come!

pets at home food is a rip off, £3.00 and the bag is half empty. my piggies hate the food. so i try and explore other pet stores that sell the food. i think you should do the same thing to keep your bill down, if i spent £40 on my piggies (unless its vets or houses) then my dad would kill me, actually he wouldnt let me spend that much!

There's nothing wrong with wanting the best for your animals, I'm sure everyone here wants the best for them..but spending £40 a week (?) is a lot. I don't really spend a lot on my pigs..that doesn't mean they're not spoilt or have a rubbish cage and don't get food though ::) Their hay is about £2.50 every couple of weeks. They've had a 3kg bag of excel pellets mixed with PAH nuggets that I had left over and that's lasted them about 2 months already. Their veg is no more than £10 a week, and that's it for weekly costs really..yeah I get them new toys, build them a bigger cage etc. but I spend probably no more than £10 a week on them. Well this week I've spent about £40 on them, but that's one off..I bought more cubes, more fleece, hay, veg etc.

I dont spend any money a week on my pigs ;D My mummy does for me :smitten: lol

haha thats true ;) ;)

my mum and sister said i was mad spending all that money on gizmo getting him neutered and a new cage do you know what they said they only live a couple of years!!1 >:( i was so angry but i know i'm doing the best for them so i don't care what anybody else might think. This month i will probabl spend £120 on him (£60 on neuterin and £60 on a new cage) but weekly usually i probably only spend no more than £5 on hay an bedding an veg unless i'm treating him to a new toy or something. But i only have one at the min until i get his new mate. i just buy another bad of p@h nuggarts when the bag i've got is nearly run out not sure how long. But i must admit i dont think i could spend £40 a week ever week on them

I don't see wahts wrong with spending £40 or even moere. At the end of the day it's your money you spent and as long as you can afford the rest of your stuff then spend away i'm sure the pigs don't mind. Every penny i own goes on my pets but always make sure to take out my living allowence, money for my catalogue bills and to top up my phone and clothes, face products etc i need at the time :D
