Scooby ( abby sccoby) was neutered on 4th December, along with four other single boars. Our vet advises 2 weeks drying up before putting them in with a sow. Due to the Christmas break I waited just under 4 weeks as I didn't have time to bond them prior to this.
However this weeks health check on one of the sows he is with, is rather large. In fact blooming and blossoming......in other words expecting!

I am furious. Little Hannah is Stan's year old sister. She has always had a petitie frame and the last thing I want to happen to any of my rescued guinea pigs is pregnancy.

Not only that but he was in with Sunshine and Polly before they were recenlty re-homed. I now have to get on the phone to the new owners and explain the situation. Sunshine is older than a year and has never littered before so that is certainly not good. Polly is 2 1/2 and out of shape due to previous back to back breeding.

Of course, I have called the vets and they just don't believe me. They say that the testicles have been removed so she must have been in with another entire boar. No chace ever ever has this happened.

They are calling her the miracle piggy at the vets and I know they are thinking i'm mad and chuckling behind my back but Cheryl has checked her for me and my suspicions are correct. We have a vet appointment booked for this Thursday so that they can check her over as they are hoping to prove me wrong. They have suggested Ovarian cysts but I don't believe it. Not so big, so soon, evenly balanced and the timing for her to appear baby carrying shape is just right.

I could cry for her and the others that could possibly be expecting.

I'm so angry !

OMG, how awful for you! And for your poor piggies!8...

How on earth can a mistake like this happen? You must be worried sick. I really hope that your piggies are ok xxxxxx

Oh no, thats awful.....poor piggies. Sooo sorry to hear that!

Hope everything turns out ok!x

Awful Claire. Would this mean that the vet never did one of the boys proper, if at all?

Sounds to me that the vets are trying to push blame elsewhere, as if someone who rescues and knows guineas inside out would put a 'whole' boar with sows!

I hope you get some answers and that the others you rehomed aren't pregnant. x

hey

I'm sure I read on this forum that it's min 4 wks quarantine before you can put a neutered boar back with ladies as before then there can be mishaps. Now, I know you can't believe everything in soaps but Ian Beale did manage to father a son (Bobby) after having the snip. So if it works for humans it can for pigs, right? There must be some medical reason for that happening, surely due to scarring not being complete or similar. I would get the FACTS in B&W as to what the quarantine should be (certainly not 2 weeks) and treaten civil/legal suit. If your older sows are indeed pregnant then the vet's mistake could potentially cost them their lives because he was careless not to double check his facts.

Is that not animal cruelty? It's certainly is negligence. Let's put it this way, medical negligence with humans costs practices millions in compensations... Maybe you could get a bit of legal advice and see what you can do.

Thank you. I am worried sick.

They vet says the only possible way this could have happened and it's like a miracle happening, is for some of Scooby's live testicle tissue to have been around or in the penis at the point of mating. Even if this is the case it shouldn't have been 'live' after four weeks!

I am so sorry to hear that this has happened. I have never heard of it happening before so thank you for making people aware that it can and does happen. I can not believe that your vet does not accept responsibility :o Do they not realise that you are a respectable rescue! I hope that the 2 other piggies are not pregnant and I hope that the pregnant one will be ok xx

Can you have your little guy tested to see whether he's still firing live ammo? If so, the op was obviously not a success and at least you should get your money back... Now, without risking the RSPCA locking you up, how can you get to check your boys bits still work?

Our vet advises 2 weeks drying up before putting them in with a sow.

Sadly your vet is giving out some risky advice there- it's at least 3-4 weeks. Still, hopefully when they see that she IS pregnant, you may have a case for them paying for any additional vet care?

Sorry to hear this .... I hope the sows aren't pregnant, but unfortunately only time will tell.

I have always been told to wait 4 weeks after neutering of a boar before introducing any sows, just to be on the safe side. It is to do with latent sperm "hanging about" in his tubes, I believe.

I waited nearly 4 weeks before introducing Junior to Lottie and Lola, as I had no choice to wait any longer because of lack of hutch space with the 6 baby boars having to be separated from mums, so I am hoping all will be ok in our shed now! rolleyes

I think your vet needs to do a bit of homework in the guinea pig department, by saying only 2 weeks as that is far too soon to introduce!

hi

sorry to hear that my vet told me i could put scooby back after a week obviously i waited longer.

i would be asking for my money back and free vets visits to check if they are indeed pregnant as you think

good luck

thats awful especially when you paid for this not to happen, when i had my boar neutered in dec they told me 4-6 weeks to be kept apart

The medical facts for drying up are between 2-3 weeks. I know other people who have used the 2 week rule over and over again and everything has been fine.
A vet and other organisations will state 4-6 weeks as they are protecting themselves, I suppose, incase one of the above such 'miracles' should happen.

I'm so sad this has happened but I guess we learn from it.

How terrible. I have had loads of boars done and been told 2 weeks many times. I have put them in after 2 weeks and all is well, though do tend to leave it for about 4 weeks now.

ah, right yeh. was going to say there has been cases in vasectomised men where the tubes have actually grown around the tied and cut tubes. but seeing as the testicles were removed .. *shrugs shoulders*

hhmmm .. tis a mystery ..

Claire, this is awful, and I would also be livid. I'm very surprised at the vets saying 2 weeks, but even so, you still held back for 4 weeks, so this is one of those nightmare scenarios. You have acted properly and responsibly, and it does seem like you've been badly let down. Please keep us posted ... this is unforgiveable.

I am so sorry that this has happened to you :( you must be so worried.
I just hope everything turns out ok and you get some answers.

Claire, this is terrible I know from speaking to you how upset you are - I'm glad the vets are going to check out Hannah for you (hope it's free!) If they did mess up, as you fear, I sincerely hope that they didn't bodge all of the operations on that day I don't want any unexpected babies either :( Keep us updated on what happens. Thinking about you all.

I heard about someone who put a boar in with 5 females (all too old or too young)
5 weeks after neutering & he got them ALL pregnant!

I'm sorry this has happened, I too would be livid. I hope all goes well with Hannah.

what an awful thing to happen and the vet wont even take responsibility?! You should definately get some free visits for the possibly pregnant piggy cos that is just ridiculous!

Sorry, just read this thread - that is terrible! I can't believe the vets are doubting you. I would be going mental at them.

Hope you get everything sorted out.

Let us know how you get on.

I'm so angry !

It could be ovarian cysts both my sows had them and one of them was the size of a tangerine. vets were shocked she made it through operation as it had moved her organs around.

Oh no! I bet you were shocked! I don't know what to say I'm so shocked. I hope little Sunshine is coping ok and Scooby is ok too. Could you report the vet or speak to someone about negligence?

I saw this thread yeaterday but waited untill today to reply because I was visiting a friend (a vet) today. I told her about this her reply was six weeks post neuter before putting a male which is standed. However I have put boars in after three weeks will no pregnancys happening.
Get the vet to scan said females that way you can see for yourself if the boar has in fact sewn any live seeds.

We have been to the vets this evening.

Hannah is confirmed to be expecting at least three babies.
Scooby was checked too and he appears to still have one testicle, or part of, therefore allowing live tissue. He is going to be operated on again next week to check this is correct.

I fear for Sunshine who is over a year old and has never littered but she is going to be checked for pregnancy in the next few days as she is with her new family.

Polly's new family I am unable to get hold of at present so they could be in for a shock.

Until the operation on Scooby has been completed we won't know for sure what has gone wrong but either way, I do know for sure that he is the daddy!

I am so cross this has happened.

I have only spoken briefly about the compensation, money back situation, as this is obviously not my priority at the moment but I won't walk away wihout some kind of apology.
