Which Nuggets Do Your Guinea Pigs Like?

I used to give my piggies Bunny pellets years ago. If I remember correctly, not all of my piggies liked them. I switched to Excel which they ALL liked. As time went on, I lost most of those pigs and the new ones had different tastes. All of my pigs now are on Harrringtons', with only two still eating Excel as well. I might try the Vitakraft as well. Harringtons' are very small pellets,so easy for pigs to eat and no waste. With bigger pellets, a lot of little bits get left behind.

I also like the fact they're small with no waste. I may look into getting Vitakraft too. Only problem is trying to ensure they get the right amount of pellets each. Mabel is a bit of a pellet hog.

I'm right in thinking until mine are 6 months old they need unlimited pellets?

Yes that is right.

I also feed Vitacraft emotion ones from ZooPlus and they have made a difference (positively) to the condition of our piggies - the teddies' fur is amazingly soft now. I try to avoid pellets now that have molasses (sugar) in them.

Zooplus also sell an"kit" made by Bunny to help you switch to Bunny nuggets. I've just used it to switch back to the Vitacraft ones with success (it took a few days first time I went to the Vitacraft ones before the piggies ate them then I accidentally ran out of the Vitacraft ones so had to give them the sweeter Burgess ones.

@piggyfan I didn't realise it was only 5 nuggets per pig needed of the Vitacraft ones - I'd better read the bag again! I knew it wasn't inlimited pellets given the age of my piggies but I reckon I've given them a few more than 5 each.

Do not worry as I give my pigs more then that too as mine are at low weights. @helen105281 is it five pellets of vitakraft?

Yes it is as they are quite big. They can be broken in half too, so they actually have 10 pieces. With a herd it is difficult to control how many each pig eats though, my Fuzzy would eat hers and everyone else's if she could.

@piggyfan i went to just put 5 nuggets per piggy in tonight and I felt so mean! I've ended up giving them a few more - I will cut it down over a couple of days! The group of 4 all seem to get a go so hopefully they still will and Biscuit and Crumble eat them together as soon as they are put in the bowl each night so no worries with them. The boys just seem to throw them around their hutch anyway!

Aww. I give mine two bowls between the four of them. I feel five is not enough too! It's great they are liking them.

i usually feed oxbow pellets but at the moment they are having a mix of oxbow, excel (still some left from the bag mollie brought when she arrived!), and harringtons (which benjie was on at the rescue)... once the excel and harringtons are gone, it'll be oxbow and i'll be trying them with the bunny ones that have been recommended on here :)

My guinea pigs eat burgess excel and they love it they eat both of the flavours xx

I tried Harrington's which were really popular with my piggies. I have tried Burgess Excel with oregano and blackcurrant which they absolutely loved. Then I got them Burgess Excel with mint but they don't seem to like them. When the pack is finished I will go back to Harringtons.

Mine also like the PAH ones but we are currently using the burgess with black currant and oregano which they like even more.

I have had my piggies on Harrington's for quite some time now. The bowls are always emptied. Recently, however, I bought on-line 3 bags of 2 kg Harrington's and found that half of the contents are made up of tiny little bits, like the crumbs that get left in the bowl. The piggies don't seem to eat these little bits, so almost half of these three bags will be wasted.
I am going to email Harrington's and ask them not to put these bits in with the normal size pellets.

My two also love these but not sure if it is best to change to the ones discussed on this thread? The Vitakraft ones? My two are a couple of gut buckets and wil eat copious amounts of anything except red pepper!

From everything I've read, it's best to avoid the Burgess blackcurrant ones for regular feeding because of the level of sugar in them. I have no idea if this is an accurate analogy but perhaps see them as the most chocolatey breakfast cereal - something you wouldn't (or shouldn't!) give yourself to eat every day. @PiggyOwner started a thread recently about carrots commenting on a TV programme where the vet had said giving a rabbit a carrot is like giving a human a slice of banoffee pie which is what gave me the idea for this.

The Burgess mint ones don't have the same sugar level as the blackcurrant ones but are not as good a balance as the Vitacraft ones, the vitacraft ones also have the benefit of being grain free which tends to be a good thing for piggies.

The thing is, the Burgess, PAH and Asda (Asda nuggets having been analysed by someone on here who found they are almost identical to the Burgess mint ones but cheaper price) nuggets are cheaper than Vitacraft nuggets. The Vitacraft are in turn cheaper than the Bunny nuggets which, from what I've read are the best of the best. For many people, some of it does come down to what you can afford. You should feed the best you can afford, I think.

If it helps on the cost front, I hadn't realised you only need to feed 5 nuggets a day per piggy of the Vitacraft. My next 2 bags are going to last a lot longer than the first two did when I didn't realise this and probably actually it won't end up so much more expensive as I thought it was. As a bonus, since I've cut back how many I give them, the mess in their cages has gone down too (the piggies used to leave lots of nugget dust).

I have noticed a huge improvement in the coats of our piggies since switching from Burgess mint to Vitacraft. You have to be prepared for your piggies to resist the change for a while and be strong knowing as long as you've given them unlimited hay and adequate veggies each day they will not starve.

So I'd highly recommend feeding Vitacraft but I'm not going to judge people for not doing as everyone's situation is different.

If anyone is teetering on the edge but the cost is putting them off, the next best one to Vitacraft Emotion is, I think, the JR farm grain free also sold by Zoo Plus and it's cheaper. It smells delicious actually but, due to the fruit in it, isn't suitable for piggies with some illnesses.

So weird question... Are nuggets the same as pellets? Or are they the cubes of feed that are about an inch by an inch in size?

Yeah I got a bag of those ones as the usual ones weren't available, piggies are eating it, which I can't say about some of the other ones they have had.

Will definitely look into the vitakraft ones as I hadn't heard of those. I don't really look at the price tag when I buy things for the piggies as I really don't care what it costs. Same for myself tbh.

Don't know the technical answer but I use the terms interchangeably. So if it's me that's said it I am not thinking of cubes like you described.

Since I opened Tees Valley Guinea Pig Rescue nearly 6 weeks ago I have got all my own piggie & the rescue piggies now eating Excel Guinea Pig Blackcurrant & Oregano Tasty Pellets. They may not be the cheapest but they're all get eaten especially the rescue boys who nearly always have an empty bowl at breakfast time x
