Hi,
Has anyone had a problem before with white discharge from the eye. This morning it looked like he had something small and white in the corner of his eye, when I pulled his lower lid down there was quite a lot of it, really thick, though it could almost be like a piece of fluff from the fleece..? After stuggling I managed to swab it out but was really difficult as he is only 10 weeks old so very small eyes and he kept closing it! I still couldn't tell after getting it all out if it was gunk or fluff or a mixture...I've put some eye drops in that I've used before for when my other pig had hay in his eye which completely sorted it out, so hoping it will clear this up too. Just hoping if it is gunk then whatever caused it is not in his eye still..I can't see anything. It looks clear now but he keeps closing it, hoping that's just because it's irritated but ok now. Thanks for any help!

if it looks irritated though and he's struggling to open it then a vets trip will be needed. eye issues can become serious quickly so home treatment isn't usually recommended. also, there are alot of different drops for different conditions. vets will also beable to put dye through the eye to check for any damage aswell. :)

Oh really!? I hope so then! I've just never seen it like that in any of my other piggies before Will keep an eye on it haha just realised the pun :p

yes, they get this secretion in the corner of their eyes and use this to wash their faces. this link might also be of use http://www.guinealynx.info/eyes.html

eta: there is a pic on the link of the milky discharge in the eye. if it looks the same then fingers crossed that is what your little one has :)

I'll see how it is, if it gets worse I will take him on Monday morning. Although not sure of any good exotic vets in the area :/ There is a vet I've used before but not sure how clued up he was an guineas, hopefully an eye issue shouldn't be too complicated for them to diagnose!

Oh it looked like that! Thank goodness, I feel bad for getting rid of it now arghh! Will still keep checking incase though lol

that's good then. hopefully it isn't any kind of infection or damage :) but definitely keep an eye (!) on him just incase. but fingers crossed that is what it was :)

there is a vet locator at the top of the home page which will tell you the nearest recommended exotics vet. or if you search the rcvs find a vet website, that will also show those near you. you have to click accredited practice and scroll through yourself to see which treat exotics. from memory i think there is a really good one near you but cannot remember the name right now!

Omg, you've got a skinny piggy? They look gorgeous   Sorry about that I was looking at the thread and saw your profile pic XD
Haha yeah, he's the one with the eye problem..or not as the case may be! He's gorgeous, only had him a few weeks! ☺️

Oh yeah! Lol I'll def give him a cuddle on your behalf, would cuddle him all day if I could! He's not too tame yet, still hides but takes food out of my hand now yey! Do you have a good local vet you use? I've tabbed a few thanks to @biscandmatt but always good to have a recommendation :)

Ermm Forest Vets is ok, on Gregory Blvd, Vets 4 Pets is umm sort of ok, but can be pricey and I was told there is one in West Bridgeford called Rushcliffe who is meant to be good. Don't go to "The Vet" with your piggies, they are rubbish. I'm still looking for a decent vet so if you find one let me know lol. Our closet exotic vet is Derby :/

That's because there isn't one XD there are vets who know lots about them but just don't have the qualifications :/ The one at the Forest Surgery seems ok, although I don't agree how he checks if your pet has lice/mites.

Sooo annoying :( I think I may phone around a few and ask if they have some one there that have a particular interest in piggies. More vets should be trained on them, they are quite a common pet these days surely!

Oh and there's one on Nuthall Road that seem ok, my son took the sows for a clip and showed the nurse who was doing it a lump on Cocoa's side, she took her off and sorted it out for her, didn't even charge us. I'm not sure what the vet is like but may give them ago.

Hi again everyone, another nightmare now...the last few days Barney has had a little bit of dry skin above his eye but I didn't think anything of it...today it's all red and looks so sore, I've bathed it with salty boiled water. I thought maybe he has just scratched it and made it sore as his nails are so sharp and obviously having no hair I can imagine that would hurt. So I tried to file/cut his nails as they are so sharp but because he is very small and not very tame yet, it was very hard, I managed a couple of his back ones on the same side as his eye but it was a nightmare, I 've got scratches all down my arm lol
Anyway since that I've been googling and think it I could be a fungal infection...if it is though he doesn't show any other signs, no other dry bits and no excessive scratching, I've checked Rolo and he shows no signs at all and with it being contagious I would have though he might?
Anyway,..any suggestions, has anyone used the Beaphor anti fungal spray and had any success? I was thinking of using it just incase then also getting the GG http://shop.gorgeousguineas.com/kwench-lotion-25ml-108-p.asp as they recomend that for fungal?
I swear so many issues for one little piggie, then again I could be over worrying like before and it could just be some dry skin he has scratched! :/

Agree best to get it checked by a vet and not treat on spec. If I was to recommend any fungal product it would be Imaverol which is a dip but can be applied topically. Is your boy a skinny too? if so I know Imaverol is ok to use after patch testing.
