Hi

I've just got a new bay girl (8 weeks old). We picked her up on Saturday and she's settled in well with my two older girls.

When I put them in there was quite a bit of rumble-strutting and a few musky smells. I also noticed that the older one 'sprayed' the baby. After that, things all settled down, presumably because she smelled the way they wanted her to and they're all being very nice to each other.

However, this afternoon, I was just checking her over and noticed a white poo-sized & shaped blob stuck to her fur beside the lady-bits. I can take a picture if it helps.

Bit worried as I've read about this kind of thing after mating :(

Any advice would be very much appreciated as I'm kind of panicking a bit now.

By the way, I've just read about mucus covered poos - this is definitely more like discharge rather than a poo covered in something. Sorry this is kind of gross...

Hi Congrats on the newbie, where did you get her from?

Not sure on the object, i think a picture would be really helpful.

Hi
Here is a picture:

It's probably about 5-7mm long. It isn't wet but more like glue.

Thanks, Louise

Ummm I haven't got much experience with sows, but are you sure shes a girl?

Sorry I forgot to answer the other question - we got her from Tameside Guinea Pig Rescue. I might take a picture of her rude bits and upload it shortly just to confirm (I hope!) that she's a girl!

Thanks x

Hi, thanks so much but I've read through this and it doesn't really look like that at all. It's not like skin but like a blob of glue.

We seem to have 2 votes to 1 that she's a girl - oh god, really panicking now!

Just wondered because Storm had a gloopy version of this and vet decided it was a mucus (sp?) plug, despite it not being skin like.

She looks like a girl but as I have only ever had girls I really am no expert.

well i am sure i must be wrong and she is a girl(did nt have my glasses on!) this thread has been very interesting!

How weird.....the other day my piggie Dillon had a glue like hard blob on his tummy....however I think this is because he is a boy.....inbreeding

Hi, sorry for being stupid but does this mean it's nothing to do with pregnancy? I really hope so.

Yep, if Storm had been pregnant it would have been an immaculate conception ")

She was not pregnant, apparently it happens to some piggies when they are in season.

I did not like picking it out though - I thought boys were the gross ones! :)>>>

Well I'm so relieved to hear most people think she's a girl - my original two are too old to be having their first litter so that would have been pretty disastrous :-(

I'll try and relax and not worry about it.

We lost our beautiful Gwen pig a couple of months ago and then the budgie's just had an operation to remove a tumour - I'm starting to get paranoid about every little thing and reading too much into everything!

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it xx

Sorry I'm late getting tho this one!

Yes, most definitely a girl, hopefully the bit of gunk was just her mucus plug that comes away before they come into season - worst case is that it was a boar glue plug that comes away a few days after mating. I know that will worry you, it would worry me too. Not all rescues separate boys as early as 3 weeks so it does have to be a consideration that she may be pregnant, I think it unlikely but not impossible.

Can you give the weight of your little girl as this is a good indicator of true age and development, I would suggest that you weigh her weekly to keep an eye on her gains.

Rescues rarely get sexing wrong, so i wouldn't worry, just moniter her weight.

Thank you Suzy - yes, I'll weigh her regularly. We weighed her yesterday at 2pm so I've made a note to weigh her everyday at 2pm - hopefully then she should have the same amount of food in her every time I weigh her. My older girls can put on 60g after eating their tea!

Are there any other signs of pregnancy before putting on weight?

I really hope this isn't the case, but I will definitely be watching her closely.

Yes, I'm sure the rescue knows what they're doing and the last thing I want to do is accuse anyone of anything.

Not sure at what stage they got the babies - may have been they got the pregnant mummy or maybe they got the babies a bit older. Like I said, she's 8 weeks old now. Keeping fingers and toes crossed.

You may have been told she is 8 weeks but there have been other pigs that weighed far less than their given age should and rehomed way too early. How much does she weigh?

Increased thirst is an early sign but waiting is the only real way to know for sure. I hate the waiting!

Thanks again for the help.

She weighed 380g yesterday. It will be about 8 1/2 weeks now as we've had her since Saturday.

Louise xx

That weight would put her at 5-6 weeks, possibly younger. The minimum for rehoming I use is 400g, 6-8 weeks at the earliest. Most reach 400g at around 4-5 weeks here.

Oh dear :-(

Not really sure what to say to that. I suppose the only good thing about it is that if she is younger than I thought, the chances of her being pregnant are slimmer.

Is she a rex? My Poppy was & she had a curly bum too :)) Poppy was exceptionally tiny, not typical of the breed at all.

It could be that yours may just be a small pig, especially if her mother was very young & maybe malnourished before the rescue had her. I think Suzy's idea of going by weight before they are homed is probably much better than going by their age, as like human babies piggies can vary quite a bit at birth :))
