Why oh WHY is it always furby! Yesterday i thought her right eye looked swollen out, and she is still not eating right and is maintaining a weight of 800g. She went to see Vedra just under a month ago as she had lost weight and was treated for mites - unfortunately i had a seizure so was not "present".

This morning it is much more obvious that it is her left eye is sunken. I spend half my time wondering whether or not she has a head tilt and she is still not right and has not been running around in her usual manic style. I still feel it could be teeth as she only really likes flat thin food (fine with peeled carrot but struggles with cube, also seems to get food stuck at the back and seem to have to manipulate her jaw to release it red peppers seems to be the worst sticking food) is fine with dried peas and nuggets. I am still hand feeding her bits of food until she refuses twice a day so that she is not pestered by the other two

The vet is going to think i have guinea pig munchausen! I still have some of the antibiotic cream we were given for her hay poke in december is it worth giving her some?

Do you mean the left eye?
It is the right eye that is shown on your photogtaphs.
The right eye, last photo, looks slightly inflamed in the front corner. Have you had a good look to see if there is anything under the eye lids?

Poor Furby. There is usually one pig who just seems prone to trouble, I have a couple here, they really do stress you out!

Does her eye seem cloudy (hard to tell for sure from the pics) and does she seem to 'squint' with it? It may be worth applying the eye ointment (Fucithalmic?) if you feel it could be a problem particular to the eye.

It is frustrating when you know when something isn't right but you can't put your finger on what - or you have an idea but you can't find anyone to listen/help; I completely understand being in both positions! Mandy (tattyruncy) also spent quite a while knowing something was wrong with her Peggy, and it was the third opinion - all three rodentologists - that a problem with the upper maxillary molars was finally recognised.

In my mind, given all the symptoms including the eyes, I would personally be with you on looking into some kind of dental/oral problem, whether it's the teeth themselves or some soreness in the mouth. Have you tried giving Daktarin Oral Gel at all, to treat/eliminate the possibility of an oral fungal problem?

OK well have had several good looks in her eyes but can't see anything and there is not cloudiness. I made her some pellet mash and added some of the probiotics to it and she took about 15ml quite happily so i am assuming she is hungry and will eat things that have been grated.

You are quite right i do not know my left from my right!

Her eye looks more normal but the way she is eating looks really odd so still going to the vets tomorrow. I know something is not right just not sure what but have a real inkling it is her back teeth on one side.

I was the "third opinion", however I am not a rodentologist, it is too diificult for me!.

I cannot spell difficult!! What chance would I have with the coursework?

to syringe feed or not as her poop are only half size, but she seems to be tucking into just grass at the mo? Booked in for 7pm this evening

I asked about whether they do dentristry with out anaethestic and the nurses reply was depends on the pig and the problem

good luck to night really hope they can sort her out bless her sending a hug to furby as being poked later xx

I always worry that i will forget to mention everything and not get a diagnosis

You don't need to do the rodentology course, you know so much about guinea pig health that I am learning from you all the time!
Keep up the good work!
Barbara

Well the vet agreed there was something not right with furby but could not check her teeth tonight so she is going in for the day tomorrow :( So she shall have her teeth checked tomorrow with no GA but still going to worry! Had syringe fed her this evening and she is now much more alert and and attempting to eat hay. I felt really mean but gave her a piece of red pepper at the vets to show her eating oddly and it got stuck and she really showed how difficult eating is for her. Fingers crossed for a diagnosis tomorrow

Good luck to Furby for tomorrow. I will be thinking of you both . Hugs to you hun..

Ask the vet how they check the back teeth. Possibly they will say they use an otoscope to look at the teeth, however there are some areas of some teeth that cannot be seen but can only be checked by feeling the surfaces of the teeth.
Secondly, ask the vet if they know what they are looking for!
Unless a vet knows what normal teeth look like, how can they recognise what is a problem?
At this point be prepared to be thrown out!

Well she is going into the vets for the day at 8.15 for a look at her teeth, going to leave a note to say i want diagnosis before treatment! Considering asking bf to take me to CCT at the weekend! Fingers crossed i get some sleep!

Is she eating?

I hope all goes well for Furby today and she does get that much-needed diagnosis. xx

Well we are back from the vets.... The vets could find nothing wrong with her teeth but to have a "proper" look at the back teeth she will need the dreaded GA. They also looked in her ears and she has a sore spot just behind her right ear and when they looked in they thought they could see something white? but to have a "proper" look she will need a GA.

We didn't have any GA nonsense! Did not give permission for any sedatives or anaesthesia

Anyway the vet has decided that she has a middle ear infection, and has prescribed metacam 0.25mL once a day with food and baytril 0.35 mL once a day

I thought baytril would be twice a day - did not mention probiotics but they is a given

What about the quantity of metacam?

Metacam dose is safe, only a bit higher than usual - it tends to be 0.1ml twice a day.
With the Baytril, it tends to be up to 0.4ml twice a day.

Fingers crossed you see some improvement with Furby. xx

She is a lot more chatty and and seems much more interested in food but i think that is the metacam taking the pain away whether it is teeth or ear i am not sure?

She is definitely perkier and as a result there is scuffles going on in the cage, i think due to the fact she wants her place back as top pig?

She popcorned for the first time in a month! whoopee pain relief is obviously doing the trick just wish i could trust the vets diagnosis
