Hi guys,

As some of you know i am looking to adopt a neutered boar or a sow to live with one of my single sows. I am on the list at my local piggy pank recommended rescue , but as of my last phone call they had nothing available.
I was wondering if i maybe got a train to a place a few hours away...would a rescue re home to me....even though i may be too far away for a home check. I do hope my local rescue will have something suitable soon, but if not i thought as half term is coming soon and i have a few days off work...i may contact rescues further afield and get the train.

Also another thing i have thought about is... would possibly asking if they have a pair of guinea pigs to bond with my girl be suitable ...or could this possibly un-balance the already bonded pair...oh i dont know.. lol...just feeling a little helpless at the moment. I am happy to wait for the right piggie/rescue to come along...i just feel so guilty.

Jenny

Some rescues rehome further afield; there are three rescues with a boar neutering policy in the Midlands that do.

The RSPCA Walsall (Birmingham) will do so, provided you pass a home check by your local RSCPA branch and arrange pick up and transport. Honeybunnies by Leicester also rehome nationwide; you could also contact RNGP Welfare in Rugby; they will also consider rehoming further afield.

Thanks, will take a look at these rescues, but wonder if they are just that bit to far away... From first looks i would have to get a number of buses and trains according to google map.

Dose anyone know if coaches let you take animal carriers on board...maybe a coach would be more direct? hmmm...

Will have to have a long think and do some research...wish i drove...would be so much easier. :(

Just been in contact with my local rescue and the boars have not been in for neutering yet as she has been very busy (understable ) but she will be contacting the vet soon and will then be in touch with me etc ...so at least thats a bit of good news ...so hopefully in a few months Honor may have a husband pig.... X

That's good to hear!

Don't rule out rescues further away though if you need them. I know it's hard if you don't drive but I have had piggies from Milhaven and BARC, both over two hours from me and also a few others from rescues within one-two hours and done by public transport. Wiebke has picked up piggies from Milhaven and BARC by train and she is an hour further from them than me.

It can be done! Paws crossed for some boys for your lovely girls soon!

Thats MerryPip. If my local rescue falls through i wont rule it out. I just want them to be happy :-) x

Hi everyone. I want to refresh this thread as if no word from local rescue by jan/feb I'm going to yry further away rescues. Can i ask do these rescues all offer piggie dating services....i am more than happy to travel if they do. Honor and Haven have both been alone now for about a year and yhey need a friend each....and now Havens medical issues are being resolved i am happy to travel further etc. Thank you .

All the rescues myself and wiebke have mentioned will do dating but in various ways. All of the rescues on the piggybank list will date. Please antact each rescue though to confirm their policy and find out how they do things. Good luck!

What I did when I first took in a rescue piggy that was too far away to do a home check was to email pictures of my set-up so they could see where the rescue piggy would be living. I think most reasonable places would accept this. Maybe also tell them your name on TGPF so they can see that you do care for your piggies.

A local rescue (NEGPR) to me did this too :-) a rabbit and rodent rescue further away in Northumberland also did this for me seems quite common to me x

I rescued my neutered boar from honeybunnies in Leicester which is a good 2 to 2.5 hours drive from me.

Jill was very accommodating and a volunteer from the rescue brought Enoch half way to me down the M1 where we met at a service station convenient for us both.

I didn't have a home check as such but she did request to see photos of my set up, their daily routine etc and was interested to hear what the guinea pigs Enoch would be living with were like which is perfectly understandable.

Thankfully for me, things worked out well but she made it clear that if things didn't work, she would take Enoch back. Most good rescues will ask for the guinea pig to be returned if things go wrong.

Obviously it depends of circumstances and situations as I was lucky that this particular volunteer piggy trains this way quite regular and I appreciate things are more difficult if you do not drive but my point is, there can be ways around it.

Good luck in your search.

yes i am in the same possition....all those rescues are about 3hours away ...acording to google map hehe

Thank you that was very helpful. I am sure some sort of train i can get...most important thing for me is that they will help bond the piggies as i am only experianced at rat or rabbit bonding...piggie bondidng didnt go so well for me hehe. :-)

I have rehomed piggies from rescues all over the country (from Gretna in Scotland to Crawley in Sussex, with a couple in Mid- and South Wales and a couple up in Yorkshire, not to mention my more local ones). Some rescues may require a home check from a local rescue, but many will be OK with pictures; it very much depends on the rescue.

There is a direct train from Portsmouth running through Coventry (frequent services to Rugby) and Birmingham to Manchester, so you could also contact The Potteries rescue Kidgrove/Stoke-on-Trent, as it is on the same train line. They neuter any single incoming boars now, too. I've just been on the train to Walsall (change at Birmingham New Street) on Monday after my admittedly difficult Nerys sadly found the most lovely chocolate gent not to her taste one day into the bonding (i.e. she failed to brow beat him into total submission!). :(

There are also two rescues in Crawley (Crawley is next to Gatwick airport); Piggie Palace is taking in more (often pregnant) sows whereas Crawley is more into full boar dating. You change at Reading for Gatwick airport. You should be able to find all rescues mentioned in our rescue locator.

Thanks thats great. I have no problem with a home check...i went through it plenty of times from the rspca for cats and rabbits....so I'm guessing a piggie one wont be so bad...although always nerve wracking haha.
Thanks for all the train info also! very useful ...not been on a train to anywhere other than southampton and winchester and those were years ago hehe. Am feeling much more possitive. Roll on the new year i say :-)

Walsall RSPCA have 2 neutered males ready to go in approximately 3 weeks, one is very friendly and outgoing the other is a little more timid, he was living in a field for weeks before in was caught. If you could get to Walsall on the train, one of the foster carers would meet you there. Home checks wouldn't be an issue at all. If you wanted to bring your girls with you they could be introduced at the rescue.

can i ask is bonding usually done in a day? just wobdering if i woukd need to stay over in the area .
can i ask if anyone has done a long travel (acording the the travel wbsite to wallsall via train its 2-4 train changes and also about 4and a bit hours each way...has anyone done travel ...bonding...and back home in the same day from that distance?
Sorry for all the questions...i am not well traveled...dont really tend to leave anywhere over an hour from portsmouth.

Also wanted to add dose anyone know a website that you can get prices of train fairs....sorry. Thank you.

The Potteries will have a neutered boar ready in 4 weeks' time, so you may want to register any interest at the rescues.

Initial acceptance usually happens within 15-30 minutes. Fall-outs afterwards are rare if things have been going well and there hasn't been any sign of aggression, but the dominance phase can last several days until the hierarchy has been cleared.

VERY few are as picky as my Nerys, who only accepts piggies she can wipe the floor with... - and her last swain refused to play cleaning rag for her when the chips were finally down! :mal:

It is quite a long trip, but I have done several trips lasting nearly four hours with train changes, so it is doable. Try to get trains with the fewest number of changes if that is possible.

Thank you Wiebke so much for all the info! I have spoken to my mum this evening and she says if i go down this rout we can try and arrange somthing for when she is off a few days in a row..and myself and she will drive us up.
So Once the next few busy weeks at work are out the way will get contacting rescues etc. :-)

That is great news that your mum is willing to drive you.

You could always contact your chosen rescue now if you are interested in any of their guinea pigs. If you have a genuine interest, most rescues will reserve a particular piggy(s ) until you are ready.

Don't forget that apart from taking on emergency cases, some may request a break over the Christmas period so there is no harm in showing any interest before you are able to visit.

Contacted Walsall (and a few other rescues via email) over the week end and this morning had a reply from Walsall asking what accomidation my girls have etc. I sent back a reply just now and i hope to take a few snaps of the cages tc and will send those on in the next few days. Hopefully somthing can be arranged in a few weeks or so and get the ball rolling :-) x

Fingers crossed Honor finds her husboar very soon and the journeys are easy for you.

Will you be looking for a friend for Haven as well?

Yes its a friend each for Honor and Haven (now Haven has the all clear from the vet) :-) x Hopefully the rspca home check when it happens will be ok. :-P Its always the unknown that makes me nervous haha x
