Please please can you all read.. I need your help to spread the word on what now looks to be a guunea pig theft. You guys are all I have as nobody seems interested that it's the most likely theft of a guinea pig./

I ended up in a situation a year and a half ago where I adopted a female guinea pig from a pet shop as a companion for my 2 indoor females I already had. It turns out the sexing was wrong and she was in fact a he.... long story short I ended up with 12 guinea pigs! Being new in to the GP scene I knew I had to make sure the babies, when ready, went to good homes. I heard some really awful horror stories of people buying baby GP as live food for snakes and then that was me decided... they would just have to stay with me as I could not take the risk.
I had the 5 boys neutered and eventually paired them with a sister or two as companions. As you can imagine this was a lot of work and I felt that I couldn't give them all the attention they deserved. I knew I had to rehome some but with the fear of the horror stories I had heard I was extremely wary. I then heard about Wood Green. So I called them and they explained their rehoming process and it put me at total ease. With a heavy heart I took two pairs of bonded piggies in and they were rehomed.... the guilt you have when you rehome is awful but I knew I'd made the right choice for them!

This then brings me to now....

I brought a pair of bonded guinea pigs in to the centre for rehoming on the 28/5/17 as some of the sisters had started to not get on so this meant a reshuffle was needed. It was with an unbelievably heavy heart that I made the choice to bring Chip and Baby in but I felt safe in the knowledge that they were going to an amazing place where care is their number one priority.
On 02/06/17 I was told that Chip had gone missing and he had either escaped or had been stolen and the staff were unsure of which. I was informed that there was cctv in the area of where he was and when I asked what was shown I was told that they weren't allowed to view footage due to privacy laws. I don't understand the point of having cctv security and then in the event of a possible theft say that due to privacy, cctv footage cannot be viewed! I offered to go to there and search for him but I was told that they have been looking and to no avail.

On 03/06/17 I received a call from the department manager who told me that she managed to get permission to view the cctv but unfortunately where the pigs were kept outside the camera didn't actually cover that area!

I know the staff are looking for him and little shelters are being put out every evening in the hope that he visits one of them for food and eventually he is found but this is only in the hope that he escaped and wasn't actually stolen from the site!

I'm going out of my mind with worry. To some people Chip is just a guinea pig and so what, worse things are happening in the world right now. But I handed Chip and his companion over to Wood Green as I thought they would be in the very best of care and the right home would be found for him as their checks on new owner homes are so good.

The not knowing is actually devastating me and my daughter.

I feel so much shame for Chip. I have basically handed him over for him to be put in a situation where he could escape or be put in a situation where someone felt they could just pick him up and take him and there were not even the most basic means of security (cctv) in place where the thief could be identified.

My heart is absolutely in pieces right now.

Please help me

Thank you.

Omg I'm so sorry! Chip looks like a stunning piggy and I'd never have thought something like that would happen at woodgreen. Which one was it? I have been to the one in Godmanchester and always thought that their piggy enclosure looked secure. It does sound pointless not being able to review the cctv footage without permission and what's the point in cctv footage if its not even facing the animals? I hope he turns up but I don't really know how to go from there. I'd put up something in other social media like Facebook etc and continue to check in with woodgreen. I'm not sure if it's a police matter because you're not sure if he is stolen. Fingers crossed he is found. X

Try not to blame yourself- you did the best thing for Chip and there is no way you could've known this would happen. It's a very unlucky situation.

It was the GODMANCHESTER centre. I'm in contact with the small animal manager Christine. They have told me there is no way he could have escaped but can't say for sure as this has never happened before! It's looking more likely that he was taken! I'm so filled with guilt I actually feel I am suffocating!

Did anyone see the guinea pigs that day to potentially rehome them? And have they quizzed the staff that care for her piggies? I can't belive it was the Godmanchester centre! Though I suppose it would be easy for a theif to access.

Oh gosh I am so sorry! I know you are probably feeling a lot of guilt but please don't beat your self up about it. You only wanted them to go to a loving home and you weren't to know this would happen. i can understand how distressing this is for you.

Okay so how did they say he "escaped"? Were they both out together? It would seem strange for one to escape but not the other. Was there a hole in the run or something? I have never been to wood green but is it accessible from the road or path? Or you have to sign in and the animals are around the back? Do they have a signing in book that visitors have to use when they visit? If so could they not contact anyone who visited that day and ask them if they saw any suspicious behaviour. I'm so sorry this has happened and they have rubbish security! But it's not your fault at all, you did what was best to find them a new loving home.

Can you ask them to put a missing or stolen poster on their website with some pictures of him and on their Social media.

Hi!
It's set in 52 acres. It's a truly lovely place. They say that they cannot see how he could have escaped so it's looking like someone bent over and took him. There has been no activity in any of the shelters they have left out for him overnight.

The cameras they have up were. It actually on the guinea pigs outside.

They're not replying to my messages on any form of social media. I'm getting an email every day from the manager and that's it. I really don't think that they want any bad press but that doesn't help Chip! He will be so frightened...

Hi @Anvil

I have merged your multiple threads together and removed the duplicated posts, so that all is together in this one thread in accordance with forum rules.

I'm so sorry to hear that Chip is missing. I can understand your distress and concern. Please don't torment yourself, you acted in Chip's best interests. And this sort of event is extremely rare.

Don't give up! Never give up! Between us we can make Chip hot-to-handle!
Do you use Facebook? We could share his picture on it! <3 He has to out there somewhere!
Please don't beat yourself up! You made the right decision for him at the time, and it was then out of your hands.

There we go! Shared it on some piggy groups I'm in, and on Merrypigs Guinea Pig Sanctuary's FB page - I'll let you know if anyone gets in touch! We just need to believe we'll find him <3

Aww so sorry to read this.. fingers crossed for little Chip x

So sorry to hear about this. I would totally post messages on their facebook wall and also on any local groups like selling pages, they reach a lot of people.

As for the Facebook post, perhaps write about how it is affecting you and your daughter? I know they are a rehomung centre and don't want bad press, so maybe they should make more of an effort in investigating what happened!

I have tried to leave a wall post and it's not showing up so I am assuming that they are monitoring what is posted :(

I left a review and it's not showing either.

I've contacted the local newspaper in the area and had no reply, wrote to Wood Green and nothing.

Thank you so so much x

That must feel so frustrating :( maybe try the Facebook page of the local paper?

Wow i've only just seen this and agree with Vicki. This kind of incident is very rare and I feel some of the comments against wood green are a bit harsh. Of course they can't have just any old volunteer or member of staff with full access to cctv, they need to ensure it isn't abused. And yes while we all care deeply for animals we are all human and we all make mistakes. I'm sure if someone there had made a mistake they will be besides themselves too.

Other than what has been done - maintaining regular contact, returning baby, reviewing cctv for evidence, and leaving our shelters etc to entice him back I find it hard to see what else the manager could be doing

My post was initially written in the days after the event. I think Woodgreen do an excellent job usually but on this occasion they have failed Chip and they have held their hands up and admitted this and they're currently making changes so this won't happen to another animal again in their care. They have put a request in for security cameras inside their oudoor pens for example. They feel absolutely awful regarding the situation and take full responsibility. They do not know if he was taken or if he escaped but they acknowledge that in either situation they were at fault.

In regards to the checking if cctv.... I didnt ask for cctv to be checked by a random volunteer I asked for the manager of the department to check... which they did days later and the cameras didn't actually cover the outside area where Chip and Baby were!

At the end of the day, ask yourself how you would feel if you were in my position?!

Hi were they out in a run, with no top?
They were in the outside area with a top. If he was stolen then someone walked in and took him. There were no security cameras directly on the area so we don't no if he was taken or escaped :(

Hi just wondered if anything had improved? Is Baby ok? Any news at all on Chip? Are Woodgreen still in contact? X

Woodgreen are still in contact and have been lovely. They've held their hands up and are doing everything they can to find out what happened. They're (hopefully) getting little cameras for their outside runs, nothing that will record the public but just little go pros so the pigs can be monitored. They're also doing other checks to see if he has been taken.

:)

it's sad lass if Chip has been stolen or lost. Try to think of Chip with a family who took him on implus and he's ok. If lessons here are lernt then great if not then boo.
