So Ellen has steadily been losing weight for the past year but my vet can’t find anything wrong with her. We were wondering if it was just her age as she’s coming up to 4

She has had an IC flare over Christmas which I have treated appropriately. She is however still eating, drinking, pooing, weeing and acting perfectly normally.

I have weighed her this morning and she’s down to 985g :(

Thankfully, both her and Edward are booked in to have their nails cut this afternoon with our favourite vet so I’m going to have her checked over but I’m so worried :(

I havnt got any ideas other than maybe Arthiritis? But i doubt it, just a guess. Hope your vet can help x

When Guinea Pigs feel sick, no matter what the reason, many times they just stop eating. And when they stop eating, this potentially can cause secondary damage to the liver. This secondary damage to the liver can be worse than what initially caused the guinea pig to stop eating.

Healing wheeks for Ellen, its very worrying when a big pig drops under 1kg- Jezzy floof dropped to about 950g after her baytril and she's regained a bit now but she's still bony round the hips no matter how many oats and carrots I give her!

I think that its only worrying being under 1kg because its like a marker that you look out for. Dot goes betwreen 960g and 1060g roughly now. She went down to 920g at one point. Before her i.c she was a steady 1.1kg but she was also younger
Shes coming up to 3 soon

Thank you everyone. We’re back from the vets now and they were mad busy so I’m glad I already had the appointment booked!

Ellen has had a good examination. She has a sore bladder which I expected and my vet still can’t feel any ovarian cysts so she’s still convinced she doesn’t have them. She even checked her teeth again for me.

She said she’s lost a smidgen of weight since last time but she still isn’t too concerned.

Ellen’s urine sample showed nothing but a trace of blood on the dip stick (I was worried about glucose as she has a history of diabetes) but my vet had it span down which showed a little bacteria, thankfully no crystals so she’s back on Septrin and metacam for a mild infection and IC flare. I’ve got to drop a urine sample off in 10 days.

On the plus side, they’ve both now got nice short nails and Edward has been given a clean bill of health.

I just feel so sad as Ellen has gone nearly 10 months with no bladder problems but it would seem it’s come back :(

I am sorry to hear about it.
I witnessed my hamsters losing weight when they get older as well. There was nothing I can do.
My Humphrey, bless him, who died at 4.5 years of age, was always on the heavy side and big as a young one. But as soon as he was around 3, I noticed he started to lose weight a bit. His life span was only about 2-3 years. He was very old, tired, and skinny when he passed at 4.5 yo. I miss the little dude, love you always Humphrey. I currently have 6 hamsters, and 2 piggies, total of 8 fur babies.
