My nearly 6 year old guinea pig, Mabel, was acting as normal, but when I put her back home after a cuddle she suddenly had what looked like silent hiccups or spasms - her sides kept jolting rhythmically. She stretched out on the floor whilst this happened, and it went on for about 5 minutes. I've never seen this before, and I hadn't fed her anything. She seems completely fine now, munching away at her hay.

Does anyone know what could be happening? I'm considering taking her to the vets, but she did have a checkup a month ago and all was fine, and I don't want to spend a lot of money if it's just hiccups because my financial situation has become poor so I'm saving my money for vet emergencies.

She has had a snuffly nose for the last two months, it seems to be from the hay, and not bothering her, but now I'm wondering if it's something else :/

Thanks all x

Mabel had heaving hiccups probably by eating too fast or inhaling too much air. It’s scary to see when we’ve never seen it before but it’s nothing to worry about especially if she’s acting normal now 🙂

I’d keep an eye on the snuffly nose but if she’s had it for two months with no other symptoms, it’s likely caused by dusty hay x

Thank you so much, I was so worried! 😵‍💫 It's my first time with a pig that has reached this age and she really is my soul pig 🐖❤️
