Dental Baby guinea pig with NO bottom incisors

All going well now. She looked on her last legs first thing - obviously hadn't moved all night - but we put her back with the group and she immediately started popcorning and eating nuggets! I'll post again when she has her incisors removed to let you know how she's getting on but thanks so much for all the advice and support, it's been very much appreciated. Xx

That is so good to hear. She was obviously missing her friends. That's something to bear in mind when she has her incisors removed that she will recover better with a friend or 2. If you have any concerns or need any help or support please shout out. We are only too happy to help. I bet you'll find that she's a real tough character - she must be to have survived so long with dodgy teeth!

A stressful day today - Aphrodite had her top incisors removed. We saw the teeth; the roots were massive. The poor little thing is very swollen and she's had some blood coming from her nose so she is looking very bedraggled. However she's definitely a character, she's already eating lots of soaked pellets despite being very sleepy! We've come home with sulfatrim, loxicom and tramadol. The vet is keen to keep the painkillers up to make sure she's eating ok and it certainly seems to be working so far. Fingers crossed for a smooth recovery!

By the way, can anyone advise whether the drugs I mentioned need to be kept in the fridge? Thank you!

I don’t keep any of my medications prescribed for the pigs in the fridge but maybe if they have a short best before date you should.

Oh my word, you’ve had a big day. Bleeding from the nose is not uncommon, but it is quite dramatic and it really upset me when I had little Melody in that condition.
You do not need to keep the drugs in the fridge. The loxicom and tramadol will keep her comfy. And the sulfatrim will help prevent any infection getting into the holes left where the roots have been.
So glad that she’s eating mushed pellets. You can also give some grated veg like carrot to help get her eating her veggies again.

Thank you both. Drugs are now out of the fridge. I'll try the carrot in the morning so I can watch and see if she manages to eat any. I've separated my piggies for tonight so Aphrodite is just with her sister and my older two, Bramble and Norman are next door. It should work out well: an old friend, who happens to be a vet, came to stay at the weekend and made some very pointed comments about the increasing breadth of Norman and Bramble's backsides, so I'm taking the opportunity to give the older two a light diet! Norman is clearly unimpressed with the reduced pellet allocation but I've told him it's for his own good!

Aphrodite has done really well today. She's had some mashed pellets, carrot matchsticks and even a little hay! She is very swollen around the mouth which is unsurprising and is much quieter than usual but is generally doing very well. She hates her medicines and fights like mad. Here's a photo of her just before dosing time- she looks so cross! IMG_20181120_163821548.webp

She does look grumpy, but having syringes stuffed in your mouth tasting of horrible medicine is no fun. Unless it's the lovely sweet Metacam then my boars won't give me the syringe back they try to pull more out of it! She is doing so well eating for herself.

Oh she’s adorable. And feisty is perfect. We like feisty. Feisty is good. And so is eating mushed pellets & carrot sticks. She sounds like she is doing brilliantly. And so are you. Keep up the good work x

What a lovely looking piggy! and a bit cross too. Christian was on lots of meds earlier in the year and he was quite good at having them all until I gave him Baytril. His face was a picture when he tasted it for the first time. It was like "WTF was THAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!" then I gave him his favourite Metacam after (that was always the last dose) and as he is a Metacam junkie and knew that would be immediately after the Baytril he tolerated the Baytril after that. The Ever Beautiful Betsy on the other hand LOVES the foul tasting stuff and won't give me the syringe back! She is one straaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaange piggy.

@Betsy that's so funny! Here's a happy photo of Aphrodite from this morning to show her managing her food without her front teeth. Because she's doing so well I've put the herd back together and I think they're all very pleased to see each other again - lots of happy squeeks and popcorning! So glad to hear she is doing so well. Lovely to see her back with her friends. x
