Hi I got my guinea pig from petco a couple of weeks ago and she started developing a scab that soon turned into a bald spot and is sort of bleeding, I’m worried and confused if it’s mange or ringworm, she doesn’t have any hair loss anywhere else but that place. I started treating her for ringworm but I’m still not sure if it even is that, I’m just really worried and really want help trying to find out what it is, and I don’t want to bring her to a vet because I’m a broke student.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I would definitely have that seen by a vet. I don’t know what it is but it looks sore and if you’re home treating it with the wrong medicine or low dose shop bought products it might do more harm than good. Hope your piggy gets better soon 🤞

I’m afraid your girl needs to be seen by the vet. You shouldn’t treat her as you don’t know what is wrong. You could make things worse and cover up the evidence, so to speak. Speak to someone at the pet shop about paying the vet fees, but take her to an independent vet rather than one of their own. If that doesn’t work, are you able to borrow money from friends or family?

Going forward, the other thing you’ll have to think about more seriously is whether you can afford guinea pigs. Unfortunately they’re not as ‘cheap’ as they’re made out to be. They’re considered exotic pets and vet fees can be high, more so in the US. She also needs companionship of her own kind. You spending time with her isn’t enough. You don’t speak her language and can’t be there for her 24/7.

I know it’s not what you want to hear but you sound like a caring owner. Please do thing about it. And I’ve got everything crossed that you will get her fighting fit soon. 😊

Welcome to the forum

Please have your piggy seen by a vet for diagnosis and treatment. It looks very sore.

Please do not be tempted to treat for anything on spec - you can so easily make a problem worse (and therefore make it more expensive in the long run as curing the proglem can take longer) and mask any signs a vet needs to make a diagnosis. Off the shelf pet shop treatments are low dosed and are therefore not strong enough to deal with any problems in any event.

Aw bless her, that does look sore :(

As others have said, please have her seen by a vet ASAP for the correct diagnosis and treatment. Sadly by home treating, you are likely to be making the problem worse. Can you borrow the money from friends or family if you’re struggling?

Please have her vet checked as soon as possible and do not treat on spec. This is either a severe advanced case of mange mites or of ringworm, which need different but by no vet strength treatment.

Un- or undertreated mange mites can kill very slowly and agonisingly. Pet shop products are too losed to cut through an acute case.
Ringworm is highly contagious and species jumping (including to humans). Invisibly tiny spores can stay live for around 2 years and cause a reinfection.

You can reclaim any vet cost from a US pet shop if treatment commences within 30 days (2-3 weeks in the UK).

Oh poor little lady, that looks so sore. You need a vet examination to find out what’s causing this, then it can be treated effectively
Please let us know how you get on x
