Has anyone else seen a hairless gp?! I saw a pic of one earlier and after having a good laugh (sorry!) I wanted to go home and knit it a jumper.........and I can't even knit ;D

Definitely not one I'd want to get - though you'd never have problems with mites I guess..... ;)

I've seen a few. A couple of people on here have one or two (not sure who), and have posted piccies in the gallery. One is called Dottie, that much I remember! ;D

Few people don't like them because of the care they need :)

I've never seen one in "cavy" so to squeak, but they seem cute to be honest! I'd love to have a cuddle of one to see what they feel like.

Each to their own I suppose :)

It's like hairless cats though - just couldn't have one! I like my pets to have loads of fur! Apart from the lizard of course cause that would be odd ;D

I can imagine they would need loads of care.....

I cant help but think it is cruel for them to have been bred in this way, they surely need their fur! Guinea pigs already have a problem with cold temperatures >:(
Correct me if I'm wrong?

Skinny pigs (as they are known) have been bred specially and used in labs. Some kind of genetic mutation.

I feel terribly sorry for these little ones and I think it's a shame that people are now breeding them in the UK. It's only a matter of time before we see them in places like PAH and advertised (for a lot of money) in the free ad papers...then eventually in rescue :'(

Sorry they aren't for me either, I like the furry ones.
Skinny pigs remind me off a mini Hippo although Hippo's are cute

I used to find them really strange, but the more I saw them, the more I liked them. It's horrible when I found out that they were bred on purpose. :'(

I just worry if the breed takes off in the UK there could be a huge problem. Many people still keep guinea pigs outdoors and these poor things would stand no chance. I also believe the breeding process has made them weak, as they were bred for the sole purpose of having little/no fur so there are alsorts of health problems associated with them. People say boars, black pigs and pigs with red/pink eyes tend to find it difficult to get new homes if they end up in rescue. These pigs would surely find it harder still as few familys looking fr a cute cuddly pet would be into them. Feel sorry for the pigs themselves but think the breeding of them should now really stop.

Awww poor loves but they defiantly aren't for me. I like my girls to be soft and cuddly :)

I'm intrigued by Barmy4Boars comment re rehoming - why are black pigs more difficult to home? I can understand red eyes - sorry but I just don't like the red eyed look myself - but I would love a black gp, just never found one. The ones near us are always tri coloured or peach, brown or white.

Same here too. I love black piggies and also red/pink eyes :)

Some people tend to think that black animals are bad luck. Same with black cats being rehomed :(

The same occurs the black dogs too; they are the hardest to rehome I have heard - all very sad :'(

Most bizarre having a thing against black fur because of superstition ?

I have also always gone for black fur before all other colours, just love my black creatures! And my horse was black.....

When I was living in South Africa everyone wanted black guard dogs because burglars were scared of them - admittedly, seeing a pair of teeth and nothing else coming at you is pretty terrifying!

Yes, if you ask any dog rescue they will generally confirm this :(
It wouldn't bother me if the dog was the right size and temperament for our home.

I've never personally found it a problem re-homing black guinea pigs, though if I am honest, haven't come ac cross many, just a couple spring to mind. That's probably because we haven't to my knowledge, a lot of people breeding black ones to show in our area. So they don't end up in the local pet shops and free ad papers.

I have a skinny pig called Doris :) she is in my avatar and she is my baby.... each to their own but i love them. They do need to be kept warm at all times and their skin oiled twice a week. They go through more food, hay and veggies than a normal pig but other than that they are just the same as hairys. :-\

As you say Evelyn, each to their own! Admittedly she is cute though, but so wrinkly! ;)

I don't really have a problem with them, I mean a pig is essentially a pig isn't it, and sphinx cats (the bald ones) are definately an aquired taste but are genuinely lovely animals. I do worry that if they 'catch on' in the UK there will be quite a few that are abandoned once the novelty wears off or worse left to freeze out in a hutch :(
I guess that a fear with any 'new' breed or species that become popular-a good example was the craze for dwarf hamsters a couple of years back which meant that alot of the dear creatures were homed in unsuitable cages, either far too small or in some cases too big; there were lots of cases of people buying 'tube based housing' which meant an animal which was too small to climb vertical tubes literally starved to death because it simply could not reach the compartment that had food in it. :(

As far as the black pigs being hard to rehome, in my experience I've found that dark self colours; black, browns, greys etc are considered by some to be quite plain and boring and therefore harder to rehome. t's all eugenics really, preperceived ideas culturally established through false ideologies...consider the fact that fewer people dye their own hair black than that dye their hair blonde because of the idea that 'blondes have more fun' and stand out of the crowd, and how many times do you hear of people dying their hair 'mousy brunette'...sorry I got a bit carried away then but I hope my points make some sense; who knew guinea pigs could warent such cultural discussion ;D

Edited to add:.. and for the record I like red eyes/albinos etc ;)
