Beans Is Struggling To Get Up/walk

The only thing is it is fish/crustacean based as it is made from Krill, whereas Cartrophen is plant based. I assume it would be ok if they have experience of using it in the past though?
Oh... I wouldn't have thought that would be suitable for pigs then if it's fish based?
I've already paid for them to be ordered at the vets, not sure if I could ask to change them... is Cartrophen the same idea as Synoquin? I don't want to use them now..

Cartrophen is usually given by injection once a month, but Jaycey has heard of Synoquin being given to someone else, so maybe just ask your vet if it is still ok to give it as it is krill based first? I wouldn't let it put you off, as I said if your vet has used it before with no ill affects & presumably with good results? x

He never mentioned using it with guinea pigs before, just that it's known to help joint pain... it wasn't my usual vet as he's not back until Monday.

Would it be cheeky to phone tomorrow and ask if he's used them for pigs before? I'd actually rather not use them to be honest now I know they're fish based..

No I would ring them tomorrow then & ask maybe to hold the order until you have spoken to your usual vet? Can you have a search on GuineaLynx for it to see what they said about it? x

I've already paid, but I don't think that should matter, I'm sure they'd get used in for someone's cat... if I had know that I wouldn't have got them.

I'm just thinking that might be a bit awkward, my normal vet and the vet I seen today both own the practise, I don't want it to come across like I think he doesn't know what he's doing... but I don't think my normal vet, who is amazing with guinea pigs, would have prescribed them...

I've had a look on guinea lynx, I searched Synoquin and it came up a thread about arthritis but I can't find the post where Synoquin is mentioned.. @Jaycey do you have a link at all? X

Several people mention Cartrophen (Although if Beans gets anxious they might not be a good idea) another one says Arthri-Aid & some say Cosequin which looks like a Glucosamine supplement x

She doesn't get anxious, why would that be an issue? Holland and Barrett seem to sell glucosamine capsules for joint pain, would that be suitable? X

Oh no I thought she doesn't like vet trips? Or is that Toast? The Cartrophen injections we had were once a month/every 4 weeks & about £28 no vet consult cost. I think Glucosamine is fish based too, unless it's the vegetarian version, but I can't advise re dosages, I don't know x

Yeah that's Toast who gets really anxious.

I'm going to phone tomorrow and ask about cancelling that order and either get the injections or try something else. Thanks x

I wouldn't write the Synoquin off; if Jaycey knows someone who has used it then maybe it might work. However I would wonder whether a piggy would take it orally & if so how palatable it is if it is fishy smelling lol :) I can only speak from personal experience & Cartrophen helped my piggy but she still had the Metacam twice daily too. Has Beans lost any fur off her legs? My Petal used to nibble her back legs if she was uncomfortable. You could always try the Cartrophen injections & see how they go & then look at Synoquin, or research it more first. I think if you remove the ramps & make her food easily accessible & have upped the Metacam hopefully you should see the difference soon x

I'm really sorry but I can't get the link to copy and paste on my stupid phone. I just searched Synoquin on Guinea Lynx, there's only one post. It's in the "Request for arthritis treatment protocols" thread in the Emergency and Medical section.

The pig was 6, arthritis was diagnosed after she started getting red feet. She became more active after taking it and she had a suspected heart condition. That's all that's in the post.

The vet she used sees many other species so maybe that's why he thought of trying it.

Please don't hesitate to ask your vet more questions though, just to be on the safe side. Your vet will either be able to provide info on how it's been used before, or will research it for you.

That's what I did when I was suggested I try a diuretic for my bladder stone boy. I found out on how it was used previously and how well it worked.

Thanks, I found it eventually. The 2 people I can find on GL who used it both say they were prescribed 1/4 capsule a day, my vet said 1 capsule a day... feeling a bit unsure about this.

I'm going to ask about it tomorrow

So I've found a bit more info and it seems the Synoquin could be too high in oils and fat for a guinea pig diet...

Really wish I'd said no and researched them first.

If only I could phone the vets right now :P

Fudge has arthritis in her hips, knees and upper and lower spine. Too far advanced for glucosamine to be of any benefit, she has such a strong "get on with life" attitude that she didn't show until it was very bad.

She is on 0.15ml dog Metacam twice a day - it's not a full dose but he can't tolerate any more than that, it causes her pain in her stomach. So she now gets Zantac 1 hour before then gets the Metacam with a spoonful of critical care, which makes it go down without harming the stomach.
She is also on tramadol 3x a day, 4mg each dose. She's like a new pig with the tramadol, doesn't make her sleepy or cause any side effects.

She can get red feet because of her arthritis so she gets gorgeous Guineas f&m cream on them once a day and her feet are perfect with that.

She also only gets her fleece cosies at bed time, as she will sleep for hours in her favourite tunnel and gets too stiff! So only gets that luxury at bed time and that really helps keep her moving throughout the day .
