Betsy's Guinea Pigs

Glad Saxon is sorted with his forever home now, poor chap. He’s such a lovely piggie 😍
He's a friendly chap who is always inquisitive when I open the door of the hutch. His nose is searching for food. He's only nipped me once but then I was walking around with him and I think it spooked him a bit. Next time we explore the house, I'll pop him in a hidey with his head poking out of the top so he can see where he's going and feels safe. He met Piggy Grandma on Sunday.

Saxon had a eventful vet check to say the least! I showed the vet his protruding willy and she took one look at it and said "I thought you'd said he'd been neutered" I replied "He has around 7-8 weeks ago" She said "I can feel a testicle and a tube. He still has his right testicle". She took him out the back and got two vet nurses to check and they agreed with her. The vet said that it didn't feel like post op hernia or swelling or anything cancerous. So both Misty and Bramble are now on pregnancy watch for the next 10 weeks.

I phoned Lilli and explained the situation to her. She said that she'd never heard of that before and that once the vet has signed them off as neutered, they are neutered. She has taken Saxon back temporarily while we find out what is going on with him. She also said it begs the question that if they took two bits out of him and one wasn't a testicle what the Hell was it? Lilli has got hold of the fosterer who had Saxon neutered at a vets local to her and the fosterer immediately got on to the vets, explained the situation and has demanded the notes. Lilli will make an appointment tomorrow with a vet she trusts to find out what is going on with Saxon. Anything to do with his care and any pregnancy of Misty and Bramble, the Rescue will pay for. She said that she will keep me informed as soon as she finds out something she'll let me know. In 10 weeks time Misty and Bramble will be with her anyway as we are off on a cruise so I'll know they will be in good hands.

I'm just trying not to PANIC!

Misty is 3 and a half and Bramble is 2 and a half.

What the heck!
My thoughts exactly (though much more polite!).

The vet said Saxon could have Polyorchidism but it's very rare. In which case the vet doing the neutering wouldn't have known and would have just taken the two testicles and thought that was it leaving the spare one.

Polyorchidism, also known as supernumerary testes, refers to the presence of more than two testes and is a very rare congenital anomaly.

Oh my goodness. I’m speechless. That’s awful. Obviously I hope they are not pregnant and that Saxon has been neutered. 🤞🏻

Lilli has just sent me this WhatsApp message.

The paperwork purely confirms the date of the op, what was done and what meds were given. No further notes about it. Reading about polyorchidism - it does happen in guinea pigs (and lots of mammals) but I will be finding out more once I can get him seen and assessed.

Yikes!
Poor piggies.
Just as Saxon was beginning to settle into his new home.
Hopefully he hasn’t left Misty and Bramble with any unexpected gifts.
It’s going to be an anxious few weeks for you.
Glad that Lilli is being so supportive .
Hoping everything will work out ok for all 3 piggies 🙏🏼

@Wiebke have you ever heard of Polyorchidism in Guinea Pigs?

Hi

I have heard of three nipples but never of more than two testicles.
It must be even rarer than the nipples, or much more difficult to notice.

Anyway, I would be really sorry if Saxon turned out to be firing on three cylinders. It would be a new one on me but I am still learning new things all the time.

I hope everything works out OK. Hopefull the tube isn't connected 😥

Wow...this is one mistifying thing. I'm hoping Bramble and Misty are niy pregnant. 🤞🤞 And of course that whatever is this issue with Saxon can be solved/investigated properly.

Just heard from Lilli. Her vet said he's not sure what the lump is. It may be a testicle, but could also be a hernia or an abscess. Saxon is going in for ultrasound and tests and maybe an operation on Tuesday. So let's hope it's not a botched neutering and 1 testicle was left.

Hope it’s not a testicle and the op goes well on Tuesday so that he can come home again.
At least pregnancy sounds less likely.
Micah developed an abscess after his neutering which an op quickly sorted out.
Hugs 🤗

Ah poor Saxon - such a worry for you @Betsy
I hope it can be sorted easily and that Saxon IS neutered
sending hugs to everyone 🥰

Oh my, I've only just seen this. What a shock. I hope every pig is ok.

We find out tomorrow what is going on with Saxon. I'm not best pleased to put it very politely! The Rescue would never had let me adopt him if they didn't think he was OK to adopt. The Rescue isn't best pleased either! Somehow, I don't think they will be using that vet again.
