Hi, I'm wondering if you could help..

Our guinea pig Belle had lost a little weight over a few weeks (50g) then stopped losing it, never gained it back but hadn't dropped any lower. Usual behaviour, very vocal and eats LOTS!

We woke up this morning with blood on her fleece where she had pooped. As you can see on the photo it seems like blood on the poo not mixed with it, her poos are usual size, one or two larger than normal and not soft. We rang our vet and she has said just to keep an eye on her.
Her behaviour is normal and she's eating like her usual self, but I've noticed another spotting of blood this evening, this time it was pink, like mixed with urine maybe. But I've weighed her and she's lost another 50g, this time over the last 5 days

I am going to get her booked in ASAP but does anyone have any ideas what this could be? There doesn't seem to be a pattern to when she bleeds, first one looked like pure blood second mixed, she's lost weight but no signs of change.

Afraid I can't help you, but will tag @VickiA and @Wiebke for you.

Is your vet a piggy savvy one?

Yeah she is. I think it’s UTI. Need a vet ASAP tomorrow. Unfortunately it’ll be tomorrow evening no doubt. She seems ok right now but I’m just hoping it holds off until the vet has seen her. I’ve given her some Metacam right now but I imagine antibiotics are needed.

Only thing I noticed from your photo was the poops were slightly pointy at one end, which can mean an upset tummy. Clearly something isn't right and needs treatment; hopefully someone more experienced will be along shortly.

Hi, from your photo it looks like she has blood in her urine, so as you say a UTI is highly likely or she may have a bladder stone. The metacam should help with any pain until you are able to get to the vet.

Hi!

Please take a deep breath!
50g weight loss is not a lot; it just means that you want to keep a closer eye on your piggy.

Since the blood is in the urine, you are most likely dealing with a urinary tract infection (UTI); if you are unlucky, it is a stone.

See a vet tomorrow during regular hours; your piggy will keep until then. ;)

Are you able to get a urine sample to take to the vets? Here’s a thread with suggestions for how to get one Urine Sample
Personally I put an upturned puppy pad (plastic side up) into a box, give veggies to distract and wait for the inevitable. I then suck it up in a syringe & take to the vets for testing.
Meta cam is good for pain relief and reduction of inflammation while you wait to see the vet.
Is there any squeaking when seeing or pooing?

Thanks for your response. I thought this was the case just sometimes calming to know other people think the same. Just freaked out because it’s 100g loss overall.

Fingers crossed it’s not a stone. Thanks again

Yes I could get a sample and I’ll take it will me to the vets. No squeaking that I can notice but she does seem to hunch up a little when she wees

If necessary and if the weight loss continues, step in with syringe feed. Pain is an appetite killer; once the cause of the pain is removed/under medical control, the appetite will return. Ask your for metacam if they do not prescribe it.
