Hey

We have a piggie biscuit who lost her cage mates a few months back.

We always thought that biscuit was meant to be on her own as she always showed small signs of aggression - nothing excessive just domination.

We decided that we would try and get her a friend as we were unsure she was happy. Although when she’s been herself she still eats, drinks, cuddles and looks happy enough, never seemed depressed but thought we’d give it a go.

So we found a piggie called Peggy who also lost her cage mate and we took her on a trial basis.

We brought Peggy home and kept them in separate cages and over the next few days moved them closer and closer.

They would climb to see each other often enough and after another day we decided to put them together in a neutral zone with hay and food.

At first it was going well they sniffed each other no aggression whatsoever. Biscuit was sniffing at Peggy but wasn’t keen to be sniffed herself although biscuit seemed to popcorn a bit - it seemed to be going smoothly.

Then suddenly Peggy tried to sniff biscuits backside and it went a bit wrong and they began to lunge at each other like a fight. - tuffs Of Peggy’s hair was on the floor. Biscuit ended up biting me but it’s okay it’s not her fault.

We then left them to it again they stayed away however biscuit was growling and squeaking at the same time.

Biscuit then seemed to chase Peggy around the neutral zone until Peggy was almost cowering behind me and almost screaming. At this point I threw a towel between them and got them separated into their cages again.

I am unsure if I should leave them side by side separately a few days and try again or if it’s just not salvageable and maybe biscuit is better alone.

If she is to be herself she is always with us gets daily cuddles, floor time, snacks etc.

I feel terrible as Peggy looked frightened but unsure if it’s normal or not.

Any advice at all would be great.

P.s - we have bonded many pigs before but this has never happened before. Biscuit has never bonded one to one it’s always been in threes.

Thank you.

Have they remained separate but side by side since? Have you tried a reintroduction?

It doesn’t sound to me like a reintroduction would be successful - pulling out hair with sows is the equivalent of a full on fight in boars.

Some bereaved sows prefer their own space after the passing of their friends. They benefit from beside neighbour(s) but don’t want to share a cage with them.
