So it's been I'm finally in a position to get my single guinea pig a friend.

My intention was to do boar dating via a rescue. But the one that's closest to me and I've tried contacting won't give me thorough information and won't confirm that they actually do boar dating. And the next one that does is nearly 2 hours away. I've got a limited period of time where I'm off work and so it needs to be soon! So I think I'm just going to go for it myself, I've never done it before! I've read all the information on here, and some other sites.

I just wondered if anyone who was more experienced had any handy tips?

Hi I won't lie I've never done it! But soon I'll be in the same boat cos Mo is gonna be getting a brother. Where will you source the brother? If it's a breeder they may very well allow you to bring your pig as you would at a rescue and tell you if the bond will work or not. At a pet store egP@h they may again allow you to see if your piggy will like a friend before u definitely purchase it :) hope this helps

I'm lpoking around, I don't want to rush :) so I'm having a look at the odd rescue and even on here! But like you say, it's hard to judge their personality from a quick viewing!

Yeah I know and it's hard of you bring them home and fall in love only for the bond to completely fail. Luckily my friend has a sow that gave birth and she has said I can take one and see if Mo takes to it. If he doesn't then she'll take him back.

That's why I was attracted to rescues, because I thought I would have somewhere to go back to if it went wrong!

Hopefully you'll find a rescue or that one will finally give you a straight answer- you'd have thought they'd jump at the chance to get one rehomed! I have tried rescues also but they only want their boars to go with sows and ask if I'd thought of neutering him- I'm not keen on the idea.

Sheffield is not that far from Chesterfield (just one train stop), so I am linking @pig in the city for you into this thread. She lives in Sheffield, but fosters guinea pigs for Barnsley Animal Rescue Charity.
If you can get as far as Doncaster and Cavy Corner on the train, that would be another alternative.

I am from Coventry and have been travelling with my own BARC adoptee (via a Cavy Corner event) and even further from Milhaven in Keighley with new adopted piggies on the train through Chesterfield.

I have four pairs of boars so I end up doing a fair amount boar dating and I wouldn't even consider just buying a pig and trying. I live near York but travel to Sheffield to BARC or have been to Milhaven in Keighley as wiebke mentioned also. Piggies travel well on the train I find. If you can get to Sheffield, I would thoroughly recommend boar dating help from @pig in the city

Happy to do residential boar dating but there seems to be a shortage of single boars at the moment! I am on the lookout for another lady who needs a single boar.
I tend to post on here when we have boars available.

Yeah, I work in Sheffield so really not an issue When I put into the search engine on here looking for rescues near me, the closest that was suggested was one in Barnsley. So it maybe that the searche engine on here needs updating?

When I put another post on here, asking about how long he'd be okay living on his own, every response was near enough get him another pig now. So if I don't seek on through other means, as rescues aren't always contacting me back, he isn't having one. So it's sort of a catch 22!

Also it's not so much the distance as it is the lack of response I'm getting from the rescues I've contacted so far. My guinea pigs also live outdoors (in a shed) and Cavy Corner has an indoor only policy.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't do surgery I don't think. Like you say, I thought they'd be more forthcoming but I think I've sorted something out now! :)

Not to worry either way, I've finally spoke to a different person and I think I'll be arranging something soon. Thanks for your advice everyone, like pig in the city said, there seems to be a bit of a shortage of single board at the minute, so it's been a bit tricky but hopefully all sorted soon :)

The main rescue is in Barnsley but the guinea pigs are with me in Sheffield!

Most rescues are entirely volunteer run small places where most poeple are holding down a job, so it can take some patience. if you don't get an answer back, try again. Have you spoken to Cavy Corner? If you have an insulated, well lit piggy shed, that is a viable alternative to an indoors home.

The issue was more I wasn't getting a straight answer to my questions not that Inwasnt hearing back from them at all, but I've spoken to someone different now who I think is more involved! So I've made arrangements with them and if it doesn't work out I'll seek something else :)

That's good to know, if I have any more trouble with it I'll let you know. if it doesn't work out in next couple of weeks I won't have the time so I won't be making another attempt until summer, I'd probably be in touch then if any time!
