Hi Everyone!

Just looking for some recommendations from any of you who have made your own c and c grid cages.

I have been looking at Kavee as I love the fact they have different coloured chloroplast and the white grids, however I think it would be a little messy due to the low sides so I am considering building my own.

Any of you who are in the UK do you recommend any suppliers for the grids and chloroplast? Amazon has a lot of choice for the grids themselves but I wanted to see if anyone had good recs here who could maybe vouch for their strength and quality as that is my main concern. I have a dog (who I trust but you never know) so I need them to be firm.

As for the chloroplast I was thinking just some hardware BBQ / Wickes type place, my boyfriend has lots of experience in building supplies so this won't be as much of a issue. It's more the grids I need some tips with.

Thank you in advance everyone!

Ive used both Amazon basics grids and the songmics grids (make sure you choose 9 hole grids)

candcguineapigcages do complete kits (I’ve ordered from them before). Their correx seems to come up higher than the kavee one does. You can also choose different coloured correx but the grids only come in black

Thank you for the recommendation I will look into them!

I bought my correx sheet from the-aluminium-shop.co.uk. That might seem an odd place, but they presumably were a good price 3 years ago, and they know it is used to make C&C cages for guinea pigs - they even have a link to another site - grendle.co.uk - which sells the grids and connectors.
(I got my grids second hand when some were advertised on here)

What I would say is if you have a dog (depending on the size/weight) there isn't a C&C grid in the world that will be dog proof.
The connectors are great, but a determined pup will be able to push through a grid that is secured this way.
If you have a dog you should aim to have the cage off the floor (above dog nose height), with a lid, and additionally secured with cable ties (not just connectors).

We see accidents on here where a pet was just interested or trying to play, but one swipe of a dog/cat paw can cause a lot of trauma to a guinea pig.
No matter how much you trust your dog, you need to be 110% sure that the cage is safe for your piggies.

Hi

Signmakers may have correx off-cuts or you could use perspex. Please do not make the edges go right to the top of the grids - ventilation is still important; especially in summer.

However, C&C grid cages are not dog proof - no cage is. You will have to keep them strictly out of your dog's reach and will have to consider whether having small prey animals in the same household with a lively dog is a good idea. It only takes seconds and happens too quickly for you to intervene; even a different room only needs once to forget to lock the door; we had a case of that with a cat just last week on here. :(

Having lost my first own childhood piggy to our neighbour's dog managing to wiggle through their badly maintained fence, I have first-hand experience. It was devastating at the time. Not all larger (predatory) pets are suitable around small prey animal pets because the instincts are always lurking just beneath the surface.
As a forum, we are regularly contacted over the aftermath, which is always extremely upsetting for the owners.
