Hi guys I've been looking around a can't seem to find an answer

Can you split a medicine dose that is suppose to be once a day in two and give it twice a day if the animal is struggling to take it all in one go?

Would that reduce the effectiveness of the medicine?

Was the medicine prescribed by a vet? If it was I would ask them. If not I don’t really know. But depending on the meds, I would ask a trained professional.

Yes it was by a vet, great, this particular vet is terrible to try to get hold of as she's very busy and popular,

Floppsy has to take 3 and a half syringes of meds at once and by about the second syringe she's thrashing about refusing it for a good hour, it's awful! And it's for 28 days!

What medicine is it that sounds like a horrible experience. You can always try to get a hold of the vets office and tell them. They may be able to tell you. If it gets too out of hand, I would even go as far as calling a different vet and explain everything including why your pig is on the meds.

Can you please tell us what medication and how much you have to give? Some meds you can split; with others a vet prefers to have a bigger hit with a once daily medication.

You should have the brand name and the dosage on a label on the bottle or package.

it's Lapizole 3.5ml
Each full syringe is 1ml so she has to have 3 and a half syringes of it at once, and .7 of metacam as well twice a day

She is a very big rabbit
I think she weights 3.5kg if I remember the vet scales correctly

I don't have any experience with rabbits. I do split Metacam for pigs though and I think I have split anti-fungal meds before where the pigs was not tolerating them gut wise. Is Lapizole a wormer?

This so what is says online:

Lapizole is a palatable, oral liquid for administration to rabbits only. It provides prevention and treatment of infections caused by the parasite Encephalitozoon cuniculi (E. cuniculi). E. cuniculi can cause head tilt, partial or complete paralysis, seizures and potentially death.

Lapizole contains fenbendazole, is flavoured with aniseed and rabbits love the taste. One pack is sufficient to give a full course to an adult rabbit (up to 3.6kg).

It needs to be given as one dose. This is why Panacur is easier, as it’s a much smaller amount to get in.

Okay thank you

Do you happen to know why, the scientific reason behind this? I've been interested while researching it and couldn't really find why some meds are once a day, while other are twice?

Exactly as Eileen has said above. I spoke to my vet about it today and he said that he would advise giving panacur instead, as you would only need to get 2 graduations in per day, which is much easier. He said they stopped using Lapazole, because for the smaller bunnies who only needed a small amount, you were buying much more than was needed, and for the larger bunnies, getting such a large amount in, was difficult for many owners.
