Little Casran was showing signs of a respiratory infection last night ... snorting and whistling when he was eating.

The noise stopped when he wasn't eating (presumably eating was forcing him to breath through his nose). But I noticed his breathing was still heavy and when I put an ear to his side I could hear a rattle.

Was gonna bring him to the vet today (where we are now) this morning.

But mid morning he suddenly took a turn for the worse. He was led on the sofa heaving for breath, whistling and snorting thru his nose with a bowl of steaming olbas oil and water next to him.

I threw him in his travel case, wrapped in a blanket and came to the vet begging to see someone immediately.

Wierdly, in with the put-upon vet, he jumped out of the travel case and skipped around without a care in the world! Absolutely no sign of breathing probs! The vet's first reaction was "wow, he's in good condition!" Mortified.

Anyway she could hear his wheeze and we have a week of Baytil to see if it's a respiratory infection.

My poor boy.

Does anyone have any videos for medicine? I've been given a syringe.

Oh poor boy, that came on suddenly. I hope the Baytril helps. Do you have probiotics too?

Keep up with the steam therapy too. Bisolvon may also help as it would dissolve any mucous but you would need to get that from the vets.

Hope the link is what you need, if not we can always record us giving one of ours something by syringe this evening if you need it.

Hope he is feeling better soon.

Poor Casran (and you too). I'm going to move your post to the health and illness section where it will get more views and advice.

Baytril tastes vile so you may find some resistance to taking it! You can mix it into a little neat ribena to make it taste less vile but that's not always successful either. It also is harsh on the gut so some probiotics are a good idea. When syringing, did your vet give you a demonstration to ensure you administer it safely?

The Baytil dose seems quite high ... 0.8 once a day?

Yes very suddenly. He's prob been hiding it for a while. Maybe the bulgy eye is linked.

No probiotics, what are they?

I've just given him a dose. He took 0.6 straight down but suddenly realised what was happening to him and got stressed so I've left it at that. Any videos gratefully received. I just wrapped him in a towel so just his face poked out and held him close then popped the syringe in the corner of his mouth. Quite a bit went on his chin tho!

Oh no. Poor little love. Fingers firmly crossed for him, please keep us updated.
Giving meds to reluctant piggies isn't always easy. I hold mine with their backs to me and hold their heads firmly, then I give the meds little bit at a time. If they struggle I do give them a break and pause and then go again. My first piggy was a breeze, she clearly didn't want them, but didn't really resist much, and I could see her swallowing it down as I very slowly syringed it in. With Freddie and Sunrise they've given more resistance, and I've had to wrap them in a towel to keep them still. Think of swaddling a baby and you get the idea.

I hope this clears up nice and quickly, it must have been horrible seeing him struggle like that.

Sorry, we replied at almost the same time. Glad you've wrapped him up, it does make it easier.

Thanks @VickiA

No demo I'm afraid. Was told to mix with Ribena. But I seemed to remember with Jemima that adding Ribena just prolonged the drama and it was easier just to get it done!

Yes the towel thing helps.

It all went in a bit too quickly tho and I am worried about choking him!

Probiotics can usually be got at the vets, and when that doesn't happen sometimes it can be easier to order them online.
There's a liquid/paste form and some that come in powder-sachets, for you to add water and syringe in, or as I prefer to do, mix with some recovery food and let them eat from the end of a spoon or the end of a syringe used as a scoop. For speed I would go back to the vets as you'll then be able to get a supply for the next few days at least. x

Best if you can to aim to one side, to squirt it into a cheek. Then if you accidently squirt too much in it doesn't go down the throat xx

Thanks. I'm a bit stressed out! x

This is the one I keep in, but it's not the only product suitable for the job :)

 He's one of those 'forum piggies' that we tend to feel we get to know and love, and I know he's deeply special to you. I'm not saying he would be any less deserving otherwise of course..... !
Be strong Casran and find your inner-lion xx

When I went to the rescue centre, he was the only piggy that bit me when I picked him up. I remember thinking: "No-one else is going to want you with that attitude, I'd better take you home with me."

Oh no, you have caught it really quickly Dawn. I am sure he will make a swift recovery. Hugs to you and healing vibes to the Lion x x x

I think he's been hiding it for a while. The vet said he'd lost weight. You should have seen him struggling to breath on the sofa this morning... he was looking at me like he couldn't believe I'd let this happen! :-(

Right. Keep an eye on him over night, did she listen to his chest? It may be worth asking the vet about a diuretic @helen105281 told us about this years ago and it really helped Cookie when she had a nasty URI.
With the baytril just get it in as quickly as possible - Ribena doesn't make it much more palatable and increases volume of liquid. Try and get the other 0.2ml in him later.

Do you have syringe feed if needed? If not mushed up pellets if he tops eating. Do you have anyone to hold him while you get the baytril in

Did the vet say whether there was any fluid on his chest?

For probiotics make sure you give them at least an hour or so after the Baytril and not at the same time. At a push Pets at Home sell Pro C which is a probiotic.

Had he just been asleep prior? I know when I have congestion on the chest it's always worse when I've just woken up as it's clogged up in there and needs to be shifted. I'm wondering if this will come and go a bit until the meds kick in, :(

I don't know what a diuretic is?

What's syringe feed?

He's tucking into a piece of broccoli at the moment.

She didn't really say anything at all :-(

She listened to his lungs and said she could hear a wheeze.

He is eating so dont worry about syringe feeding - this is only needed if not eating. It is something like Critical Care or Science Recovery. Mushed up pellets works just as well and was suggested to me by @furryfriends (TEAS) it goes down a treat. But while eating dont worry about it.
