Hi all,

My 3 year old Gerdie went to vets on Monday with blood in her wee, she's on a 7 day course of enrocare but we've now completed day 4, and there's still blood in her urine. Does anyone with experience of simple cystitis know whether this should have resolved by now?

I'm really worried she has a bladder stone and I'm terrified for the cost of surgery. She already has £300 dentals every 2 months which has wiped out my savings (I'm a student literally graduating next week), I don't have anyone in my family I can ask for help financially and since my job doesn't start till the end of the month I don't think I'll be able to get a credit card or a loan. I'm also in the middle of a house move, although I can get back to my regular vet (Eaton vet in Norwich) easily until I move permanently next Friday, I'm worried about finding a good vet in my new area (Keighley, Yorkshire).

She's under the care of Toll Barn in Norfolk for her dental treatment and my local vet advised that I ask them to scan her whilst she's under GA for her dental on Wednesday, but this will cost more than my local vet so I think I'll try and get her to Eaton for an ultrasound or x-ray on the Tuesday to confirm if stones are present (without GA, she's a good girl and I'm sure she can keep still), then ask toll barn what the cost of the surgery would be.

I've considered the thought of PTS. this breaks my heart because although I've seen online there can be mixed outcomes with bladder stones, if this is what is going on, she will have a good chance. She's only 3 and is the sweetest most affectionate pig I've ever had. I don't think I can ever forgive myself if I PTS because of money

Sorry this was all over the place, I don't really have anyone else I can talk to who will understand and be able to give educated advice.

Overall:
1) after 4 days of abx, if she's still bleeding, is this likely an indication that there's something more serious than cystitis going on?
2) any good vets in the Keighley area?
3) any charities or anything I can reach out to for help with vet costs? I'll be able to repay in a couple months. (Toll barn doesn't offer repayment plans)
4) if anyone can provide any reassurance or advice on what the right thing to do is here, I feel so unsure and lost

Thank you in advance

Update: literally after hitting post I got some money from a relative to help with my house move, which I'm obviously going to put towards vet bills instead lol. (I can't ask for any more, this relative is the only person with money in my family and thinks animals are a waste of time)

I feel as though my mind has calmed a bit now I know I'm not going to literally run out of money and my overdraft even if she ends up needing a costly surgery.

I'd still love any input on the above questions though. Thank you guys, I always come and read this forum whenever I have worries even if I don't post much and over the years it's been so useful x

Hiya, sorry to hear that Gerdie has had some blood in her urine. I have a piggie that has cystitis, when she does have a big flare there is red in her urine, however we treat with metacam and cystease. I've not heard of Enrocare so had a quick Google and it says its for gastro or respiratory infections - does your vet think it's a UTI or Sterile IC?

I also have another piggie or had stones removed in June of last year when she was 5. It was one of the most terrifying days of my life, my I trust my vet and my girl was so strong and she pulled through, she had an xray in December of last year and no sign of stones and she celebrated her 6th Birthday in April. I know there are mixed out comes for any piggie surgery but Gerdie is 3 it sounds like she does OK under GA for her dentals so I would factor all that in too.

On a personal note congrats on graduating and I hope everything goes well with your move.

I'm not local to any of the areas you have mentioned so cannot recommend a vet sorry and I'm not sure about charities making payments etc. If you are considering PTS it may be worth seeing if you can surrender her to a sanctuary who can raise funds for the surgery. I'm not too au fait with how that all works, someone may be along soon to provide more advice.

Best of luck and I hope Gerdie feels better soon x
