I noticed recently that Doris had been making a strange noise while breathing, similar to that when you breath in and you have mucus and the chest rattles. So as I was going to the vets today anyway I took her along too.

The vet had a good listen and feel of her. She says it could possibly just be a respiratory infection, or that it could be due to fluid around her lungs indicating a cardiovascular problem that could be due to her age. :( Her breathing is also quite laboured/rapid although the vet wasn't sure if that was because she was stressed due to the vet visit.

So she's on a course of Baytril for the next week along with pro biotics to see if it makes any difference. If not she may have to go on a 'diuretic'?

My poor old lady :( She's 6 in August.

Healing vibes for my Dory please x

I love the way my piggies know that I'm their mummy. Whenever the vet is finished examing them they run over and lean against me as if to say 'mummyy i'm scared'.

Doris was so well behaved for the vet (although weed and pooed all over the table) I just hope she's going to be ok.

Poor Doris, the way she runs over to you is very cute, bless her. Keep a close eye on her and if it doesn't seem to be shifting or gets worse, I would get beck. I hope she will get better soon, lots of healing vibes her way x x

:( poor old Doris, sending her my healing vibes. Did it sound like this? [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzS8G3Gh_nI"]Guinea Pig Hooting - YouTube[/ame]

It's called hooting and can be associated with heart problems

Sending her my best wishes. Diuretics are medications which drain the body from excessive fluids; they are commonly prescribed for people with heart problems.

Furosemide is the most common diuretic, and it is recommended when there is a suspicion of URI to help ease the breathing and clear the lungs from any build up of fluids.

Well it has almost been a week and there isn't much improvement :( She is still grunting/hooting, although I don't notice it as much as possible we will still be returning to the vet.

Poor Doris, hope the return to the vets goes well and they can get her better soon

Just caught up on Doris :...
Poor little girlie, i do hope they can figure out what's up.....

HEALING AND LOVING WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKS FOR YOU DORIS XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Ok had the call back. Anne wants to try Doris on furosemide (sp?) which is a diuretic to see if it makes her feel any better as she was worried it needs to be treated as her heart rate is very fast and the antibiotics have had little to no effect. Poor Doris. :( Has anybody had any experience with furosemide? She told me it's a tablet so I'm not sure Doris is going to like that and hoping for some tips.

Awwww poor baby, hope she gets well soon lots of love and kisseys from me x

Poor Doris, i hope she starts feeling better soon. : (

Furosemide is a great drug for heart issues etc. It is available in a liquid form called Frusol. So if you have any problems with tableting then ask your vet about this. If they wont prescribe it then ask for a prescription for it.

x.

I've used it before with a pig with a URI, it is easy to give to them & can literally save lives. Hoping Doris feels better soon :)

Thanks, she wants me to ring her after about 5 days use to update her then arrange to bring Doris in so if it's not working well in tablet form I'll ask about the liquid.

If you are worried about giving a tablet/part of a tablet, grind it to powder & mix with a tiny about of water to a paste & syringe it to her. Give her a nice piece of veg straight afterwards to disguise the taste :)

Doris is not going to be happy with me!
I'm assuming the furosemide is just a short treatment to make her feel better, but I assumed heart problems would be ongoing?

Tablets haven't arrived 8..... were meant to arrive today the latest. She said sometimes things go missing in the post but was really hopeful :( guess I'll just have to pick some up on monday when I take Willy to the vets. Things just aren't going right lately

I am sorry and hope that Doris is still holding up?

Yeah, she seems to have perked up a lot but still making the horrible noises
