Dear old Doris is not well.

Things just get worse! I thought Doris was making bad chest noises today, so go to check on her but I realise it's Tilly making the noises today! Does this mean that Doris had an infection and has passed it onto Tilly? I'm sure Doris has heart problems though, don't know what to do 8...

Thought I would update this if anybody reads it.
Doris was on the tablets for just over a week and she has improved. She still makes grunting noises when excited/scared but no hooting. My OH took her for her checkup today and apparently the vet said her breathing hasn't improved that much but she is better and its hard to tell with the stress of travelling/weather. So she's given us more tablets and she's also considering prescribing metacam as Doris is getting on she's not using her back legs that well and it may help her out. Obviously she can walk and that but she's a bit stiff, she can't get in/out the litter tray anymore. Also it's been found that she has ovary cysts and she may be booked in for an x ray. So not going too well for my little Dory at the moment :(

Thanks for the update, sending Doris lots of love and healing vibes x

Healing wheels for Doris from me and my piggies. I really hope she starts recovering properly soon :laluot_29:

We've been back to the vets today as her breathing is bad again with lots of noise.
Anne had a listen and she's increased Doris' furosemide dose. Gave her an injection of it today to try and boost her.
She has also prescribed an additional tablet to help improve the breathing (can't remember the name)
So... we've ruled out infection with antibiotics originally. Now if these tablets with an increased dose etc aren't effective it could be possible she has a tumour and she may need an x ray.
Good vibes needed please :(

Sadly there has been no improvement. Making decisions is really hard. The options were to investigate further with a chest x ray, monitor her or cancel out allergies. The x ray does worry me as she is quite old. And the fact that Doris seems fine in herself but is just making horrible breathing noises is strange to me. So before going for an x ray I had decided we cancel out a possible allergy by giving her meds for this to see if it makes a difference. If not, it will be an x ray.

I asked the vet what the options would be if she was found to have a tumour (as an operation is not in the cards) and she mentioned steroids. I don't actually know much about these.. does anyone have any experience?

What a worry for you. I am really sorry to hear all you and Doris are going through. :(

Poor Doris, sorry I have no advice. It is a good sign that in herself she seems fine. What is she bedded on? Have you changed washing powder recently etc?

Hope you get some answers soon, lots of healing vibes to Doris x

She was on woodchips but as soon as i noticed she had breathing problems i changed to fleece. Haven't changed washing powder :(

We have progress! :<>
Anne gave Doris an injectable steroid antihistamine? On Wednesday evening and also asked me to give her some sudafed twice a day. This was to test the possibility she had an allergy as well as congestion as her breathing noises have turned very nasal and throaty rather than chesty.
The vet said it was difficult to listen to her heart and breathing with the background noise .
But anyway, the day after the vets I got in from work went upstairs where I can usually hear Doris from (about 4 metres away) but nothing. Walked into my room and upto the hutch.. nothing. She's hardly making any noise at all now except when you put your ear right to her face there's a slight raspy-ness. So glad.
I'm also still giving her the diuretic and vetmedin for her heart as Anne still thinks this is an issue (so a combo of both)
She's happy that Doris also has a stable weight
Woohoo

I am so happy to hear this! How wonderful to finally see an improvement. :)

Things are now going well.
Doris has maintained her weight and is still perky. The noises have stopped.
She's now on the furosemide and vetmedin with sudafed. I also have back up steroid tablets if she gets bad again.
But the vet was very pleased with her. I wore my guinea pig hoody to the vets she must have thought I was a bit mad.

This picture is a couple weeks old now but thought I would show you guys a piccy of my little lady

what a sweetie x) glad to hear see is doing well.

Doris seems to have taken a turn for the worse this afternoon. I must have jinxed it because I emailed the vet this morning to tell her she was doing well :(
When I cleaned them out earlier she didnt really want to run around/move in the run. I thought maybe she was tired, and when I put her back in her hutch instead of exploring she plonked straight onto her bed. This evening she wasn't interested in any veggies for dinner. Had to slightly force the cucumber into her mouth. She took one bite which had the diuretic in and ate that but then turned away. She walked across the hutch half way, then back to bed and flomped. I put cucumber and lettuce to her mouth (her favs) but she turned her head .. not even moving her body she seemed too tired.
:(

She's worse 8... she was still in the same place as she was last night. I tried her with veg again, shemanaged a bit of cucumber and lettuce but the same again. I moved her slightly and where she's been is bone dry. No wee and no poo. I thought I'd try giving her her favourite (readigrass) she took a strand then tried to walk off, then laid down her head. I'm meant to be going to hospital this morning but i think it's going to be a vet visit instead.

P.S I have a bag of critical care but can't remember how to make it up/what to do. I have syringes spare too.
