Hi all

We have recently taken out pigs to the vets and one has been prescribed virbac enrobactin. The vet has told us to administer 0.7ml by syringe daily. On the box for the medication and in the instructions it says to dilute the solution but the vet didn't mention this at all and we are worried about what to do.

Hi and welcome

If you have questions about the medication and the dosage you have been given, you can always ring up the clinic for confirmation/clarification.

Enrobactin is a new exotics brand that contains the same active ingredient as the old baytril. If the concentration is the same as in baytril, then the dosage is correct for a slighty sub-kilo piggy. I would however recommend to split it and give half of the daily dose about 12 hours apart because of the fast metabolism that guinea pigs have.

Thanks for the quick replys will call the vets tomorrow and confirm the instructions. Just wasn't sure if others have had and used the medication before.

Recently there are new baytril brands on the market; so far the dosages seem to be same as for baytril.
However, if in doubt, please always confirm your vets. Without knowing the illness and the weight of your guinea pig nor the concentration, we cannot give you any confirmation whether the prescription is in the right ball park or not.

He is a fairly large bore weighing 143g I have taken a pic of the vets label

Sorry yes 1430g he's a long guinea pig almost the size of a bunny lol. It has be prescribed for a upper respiratory infection.

Then please start at the prescribed dosage; URI can kill if it is not treated!

Rabbits and rodents, for which this brand has been developed, come in all sizes when you consider hamsters, mice or gerbils. Your boy is one of the larger ones to be treated with enrobactin and won't require any dilution.
