Facial abscess - my lovely Rodney ;(

Erm, well I wouldn't say huge he looks like he has food stored in his cheek. It's not tiny but not huge. She could see no sign of a cut or mark or redness inside his mouth or out, would an abscess look red inside? He also had a slight crusty nose when I got home from work today.

Jenny was amazing with my other pig Rufus but unfortunately he had a tumour & was so poorly by that point. He was bones & couldn't eat. Rodney has not stopped eating since he got in, literally every time I look at him he is eating. Bless him!

This is Rodney after his appointment today.

You can't see a great deal, but you can see his lopsided cheek.

He is my absolute angel. He is such a lovely boy, and his cuddles have helped me through losing my dad last year. I will be devastated if he can't be fixed.

He is very special. He is so sweet natured.

Update! Took Rodney to Tilehurst Vets to see Jenny Towers - Jenny was caught behind in surgery so he was seen by a lovely vet called Amber who was amazing, and checked with Jenny throughout.

He has an abscess, which was drained on site. The goo is being sent off for live culture tests to make sure he gets the right anti biotic.

I'm taking him back next week, he may need a tooth out if its been caused by a tooth root abscess, but we are giving him a few days of new anti biotics & anti inflammatory.

He is back home & has eaten dinner. He was good as gold & everyone fell in love with him.

So getting there, altho he may end up having a tooth out next week. I'm going to read up on this...

Had I continued with my local vet he'd have half a face by now, they were planning on butchering him this morning & had they found a tumour wouldn't have woken him. Tilehurst remove tumours all the time.

Word of advice if you are ever in this situation, go the extra mile to a decent guinea friendly vet. He's got a way to go, but they were very positive & I feel will be well looked after. I am VERY relieved I made that trip!

Here he is after his busy afternoon!

I'm so glad to hear little Rodders is on his way to getting better, it must be such a relief to know he's in such good hands!

The team at Tilehurst are fantastic, always felt put at ease by them. Well done for going the distance, hopefully it'll be smooth sailing for you both over the next week :)

Keeping my fingers crossed for you and the little man x

Good luck for Rodney's full recovery. Thinking of you. Let us know how he gets on. He is a very beautiful boy.

Oh thank goodness everything is okay. How awful to think he may have had such a different time at the other place. :(

Thanks guys! Still worried about the cause of it, I think it's likely to be tooth root but will see how he gets on while we wait for his test results. It's worth paying out for the live culture test to find out what medicines to use. If he does need it removed then he will be in great hands.

He is a little quiet this evening, but he's had a busy day. He's just had his metacam & is now tucking into some hay.

The difference between Tilehurst and our local vets is just astonishing, why can't more vets be more open minded!?

Billy is chuffed to have his buddy back, think he may have been a bit lonely this afternoon! :)

Brave little man tucking into some supper....

Awesome news about Rodney, my Fred was back at the vet today also seems we might be dealing with an abscess too. Was good to read such a positive update I'll be keeping my eye on this thread as it seems to be getting more and more similar to my problems with Fred now.

Get well soon Rodney! x

Oh dear hugs to Fred! Well just be wary hopefully you have a good vet. My local weren't interested massively, they just wanted to slice into his face & maybe wake him up maybe not. No thanks! Not when he's happily eating & otherwise healthy! Feel so much better knowing his problems will be properly investigated, I hate being fobbed off with that bl*ody baytril! This vets operate on guinea pigs routinely, if I have to put him in I will feel much better about him being there.

Good luck to Fred! x

And yes, I think Billy completely thinks he is awesome. Literally loves himself.

Hilarious :(|)

We have an awesome guinea pig vet too so I have no concerns that my Fred is in good hands, he's just like Jenny he's the guinea pig vet! He has always worked miracle's for us, he saved my P's life and has did countless dental's for Fred. He really spends the time examining them in fact it was actually him that found the swelling at a routine check up 5 weeks after his dental. He did a fine needle aspirate and there was no fluid, so we're sending the sample off to a pathologist who'll hopefully be able to tell us what we're dealing with. Although even in a matter of hours it's bigger again so I'm thinking abscess and will phone my vet tomorrow to let him know how quickly it is growing.
