I was sent a message by the vets saying the boys are due for flea and worm treatment. Is it necessary?

No, not in guinea pigs. They do not have species specific fleas and worms are only very rarely a problem; virtually never in indoors piggies.
Cat and dog flea treatment can actually be damaging or even lethal for rodents. What you have got is an automated reminder that doesn't take the species into account.
