Hello

I'm from Slovakia. I have 2 guinea pigs, Lima (3 years) and Leya (2 years). And currently Lima is sick again, this time it is bladder crystals. That's why I decided to revise their diet. I found out that until now I was feeding my piggies wrong, because the diet was based on the knowledge I got on Czechoslovakian forums and websites. But this time when I went to this English forum I learned a lot of news, e.g. that a guinea pig should get only 30-50g of vegetables. The Czechoslovakian site says that the minimum vegetable intake for one guinea pig is 100g. I also learned that root vegetables every day as the main evening meal is not a good idea. Again, this stuff came out of the Czechoslovakian websites. I'm very confused. And I guess I'll have to feed them gradually according to what I found on this forum. Until now, romaine lettuce and carrots have been a significant part of the diet. I'll have to go to the stores in my area tomorrow, as I've never bought most of the vegetables that are recommended. Then I'll make up a menu for them based on what I find.

So far, what vegetables do you recommend for Lima who has had one urinary tract infection, bloat two times, and right now bladder crystals? and should I rinse the vegetables and then give them wet, or should I wipe it off? I have chosen oxbow western timothy hay as their new hay, and i use versele-laga cavia complete as their pellets , because I don't think anything better is available in my country.

You may find the following diet guide helpful. I and many other members follow this diet for our guinea pigs Long Term Balanced General And Special Needs Guinea Pig Diets

Guinea pigs also only need a tablespoon of pellets per pig per day and it’s recommended to filter their drinking water as tap water contains a lot of calcium especially if you live in a hard water area
