Hi, I’m sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum firstly! However I’m looking to foster a male guinea pig due to losing one and having a single bereaving boy now, and I’m just wondering if anybody knows any sanctuaries etc that will foster to me in the Liverpool area? Surrounding is alright, but I don’t have the facilities to travel too far out of Liverpool. I have looked around myself and I can’t seem to find anything just yet. I’m gonna give a few sanctuaries a call but I’m not all that hopeful to be honest. Are there any alternatives for me if I can’t find any pigs to foster? The idea of adopting a pig just to hand them back when my older boy passes away doesn’t really sit right with me but I am looking to break the cycle :( It’s possible that I have a friend I could pass him on to, but I think that would just break my heart. Of course if worst comes to worst I’ll do what’s best for my piggy, but if anybody has any advice or websites I can visit I would really appreciate it!

I don’t know if single boars are regularly fostered out. So best would be to foster a friend until he passes away, hard as that is for you. At least that way you know you’re keeping them a short time rather than it being permanent as it would be with adoption. They don’t tend to post about singles so do have a ring around.

I’ll link the rescue locator below. Have a look and see if there are any near enough for you to travel to. If you can get a train/bus to them then also consider those a little further away. There’s also a piggy train - sometimes people are able to help get the piggy closer to you.

Thank you! I will have a look and phone around. If I can’t find anything, I’m confident that my friend would take good care of him and I can visit regularly, so it’s not a big issue. Thanks again x

I hope you find a solution.
Out of interest, what combination of piggies does your friend have to enable her/him to take on your piggy?

It’s either that he has two boys or a single boy! I’m not too sure as he’s more of a family friend to my mother than to me. I will check beforehand :)

Definitely check. If your friend has two bonded boys then your boy will not be able to be bonded in to live with them, he would only be able to live alongside in a separate cage. If his piggy is a single, then he can be bonded but whether it is successful is down to the piggies as mutual liking and character compatibility is essential.

Thanks for all your advice <3 Fortunately he lives just up the road from us so play dates are easily arranged to see how they get on and how my boy socialises with others!

As I say, if your friend has two bonded boys who live together happily, then your boy cannot physically be put with them at all. A trio of boys living together results in fights almost every single time, and at worst keeping three boys together runs the risk of breaking the bond of his existing piggies resulting in three single piggies.

Stop/start Play dates between two males can’t be done either. It has to be a full on bonding session seen through to conclusion whether that be failure or success.

Ahh thank you! Hopefully it’s just the one then. I’ll let you know later on once he texts me back :)

Good news! It’s just the one guinea pig and we’ve found out that a nursery near our house is looking to foster out a boar long-time so there are two options for my piggy! :) He seems alright for now and his brother only passed a few days ago so fingers crossed we will have a good amount of time to sort everything out! Thank you to everyone who helped!

Good news. If the centre does bonding, and that’s what you decide to do, then I would take him in and they can see if they get on. Good luck ☺️
