So this isn't about me and my piggy Mo- thank God as it's pretty scary- but my friend has had a terrible turn of events. She messaged me yesterday explaining how one of her sows had something coming out of her mouth and died in her arms. I'm guessing it was a liquid/foam but I'm not sure as I'm currently on holiday. She has eleven pigs and they're all kept reasonably close together. This is where I was hoping to get a friend for Mo from. However today, she said that two of the youngest piggies have also died. She hasn't done anything differently or introduced or anything new so what could it be? Is there a way she can make things a little better?

Hi! Has she seen a vet? It sounds like she has either got something very infective or poisonous going on. :(

Just asked apparently the stuff coming from their mouths was greenish and came from two of the ones that sadly passed . I feel so bad for her as these were her babies and I understand how scared she must be for the other 7.

No I don't belive she has seen a vet yet and I asked but she said that at the moment it is too expensive to take all 7 to the vets and she's only just come back from an operation herself.

I'm probably totally wrong, but my mum had greenish yuk coming out of her mouth when she died. She had pneumonia, but I would have thought that's not contagious.
Keep us updated after she has taken them to the vet. Huge Hugs to your friend, that's hard when your piggies are being wiped out by an unknown cause.

I think pneumonia can be contagious, which is why there is a vaccine against it for vulnerable people. In any case I would not be taking any of her piggies @Jesse's pigs , you should find a friend for yours at a reputable rescue to find the best friend for yours, where they have been quarantined etc :)

Thank you I've passed this onto her as she seems a bit lost and shocked. She's going to ring the vets tomorrow and at least get the babies etc checked over and ask for advice on what to do.:) I can only keep my fingers crossed for her as I love them too and held one of those that passed in my hand when he was just a few weeks old. Very sad.

hope no more piggies are ill, tell her I'm so sorry to hear about her losses :,(

So just an update. My friend recently returned from the trip she had to take and thankfully her piggies are all still ok. These are the three little pups which I was most worried about but thankfully they're ok and growing bigger. So long as all goes well in the next few weeks and once sexed / had a full once over with a vet and quarantined I may have a new friend for my Mo. If not I will persist to search rescues but at the moment they only want to pair Mo with sows and I would like to try a boar before taking the neutering step. Obviously I will not be taking a baby if I fear it will harm Mo's health in anyway. :)

Unfortunately two of those babies in the picture above passed away today despite a vet visit and observations. (The one on the left and in the middle- the middle one being that which could have been Mo's friend). I know my friend gave them the best life they could have had in the short time they were with her but it is still sad that such young piggies lost their lives. Now her focus is on the rest of her pigs to stop this from taking them all. Sorry that it's a sad update I seriously believed they'd be all okay now.
