Gagging

D

Deleted member 157166

Hello,

I’ve noticed over the past few days that Ginger has been gagging when eating food or hay. She does eat but it’s slower than usual or she’s picky. I’ve got a feeling that there’s something wrong with her back teeth as her front teeth are fine. Her weight has been relatively stable with minimal weight gain and loss. I wish I could sent a video but it won’t let me. I’m booking an appointment to check her teeth and mouth.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

I’m sorry to hear that

Video has to be uploaded to YouTube and then a link to it listed here (we can’t host video on the forum - it’s expensive).

This definitely warrants vet check, it could be dental or in fact any other issue in the mouth not involving the teeth (Oral thrush for example).

In the meantime keep up with daily weight checks so you can monitor closely and step in with support feeding if needed

Keep us posted. I hope she is ok

Hello thank you,

I’ve booked one in for Thursday but I will ring to see if they can get me in first thing tomorrow morning.

She is relatively her self and is going to the toilet as normal. I got someone to have a look at her gagging and she decides to stop gagging as soon as someone else is here. I feel insane sometimes. I’m weighing her daily as I felt like something was off but couldn’t put my finger on it. Her gagging has only been going on since yesterday afternoon.

I managed to get my pig in at around 8.30 this morning. The vet did a thorough check of her mouth, teeth, tongue and back of mouth but could not see anything that could be causing it. No overgrown teeth, abscesses, wounds or any fungal infection. She swabbed around the top of the mouth where the front teeth are and found a lodged piece of hay in between her front teeth. The vet said to keep an eye on it for the next week or two to see if the gagging continues. If it does then she has to have an xray and another evaluation under anaesthetic. These pigs sure are a mystery and something that worries me a lot sometimes.

She also gained over 20g this morning which is also good

Hi

Please make sure that if the gagging continues, your vet also checks for oral thrush (a fungal mouth infection, which is often overlooked but which can cause swallowing/gagging problems), as can a potential throat infection.

All the best and good for having her seen.

I did enquire about that but they said they couldn’t see anything that would suggest that it is that at the moment

I showed a video of the her gagging and the vet says that the way she is doing it along with her hand motions looks like she had some sort of irritation from the the front as the gag was not deep so from the back. That’s what the vet has said in a roundabout way

I just want to mention as well her breathing was checked and there’s no whistling or wheezing noises, no drooling, nasal or eye discharge and there’s been no sneezing or coughing.

I’ve noticed she’s eating quite slow when eating now. Is she training herself not to eat so fast now. She hasn’t gagged since I’ve been back from work and it’s been an hour. She gagged every 5 minutes when eating before. I’m hoping this is a good sign

Spoke too soon, she’s just gagged and she keeps wiping her nose. There’s no discharge or any noises

I’ve seen her this morning. I have not seen the gagging so far. She did gag when I saw her last night at around half past 10 but I haven’t seen it since. I weighed her and she lost 16g (could be within normal range) so I just supplemented her a little bit with emeraid (which she quite liked). She only wiped her nose once. She has been drinking well and going to the toilet well. She loved her lettuce and mint this morning but she left a lot of her pepper. I’ve left it in there just in case she goes back to it later

She seems to have a swallowing issue of some sort with it then backing up into the nasal cavities. But I am glad that by eating slowly and with the hay piece removed, she is not gagging much.

Wishing you all the best. At least she seems to be holding her own weight. The daily weight swing of ca. 30g is always lowest first thing in the morning.

I will keep monitoring her closely for a few days. I booked a preemptive vet appointment on Monday just in case the situation gets worse. For now though, she’s eating relatively well (she struggles with harder pieces of hay), going to the toilet well and keeping her weight up. I weighed before dinner time (6pm) (I know your not supposed to but I wanted to know if she gained weight) and she’s gained weight during the day and not lost it. She has gagged a few times when I’ve been back from work but it’s been whilst she’s eating and she hasn’t wiped her nose since I’ve been with her

So at least it is no longer backing up into her sinuses. I wish we could tell you what exactly is going on but sadly we can't. We can just be there for you for care questions and moral support.

Thank you, I know it’s hard to know what is really going on as she acts semi normal but with a little gagging. I’ll probably ask for an xray if I feel like she’s not better on Monday.

*UPDATE*

I have taken Ginger to the vet this morning to have a check up. Her vitals are all fine and she has her mouth and teeth checked again and the vet said everything looks good from where she is. She suggested to see how she is within 2 weeks and go from there if there is any further concerns. More than likely a sedation, thoroughly looking at her mouth and xray if things don’t improve/worsen.

She is eating her veg and hay slowly

Her weight is maintaining she’s not gaining a lot or losing a lot. She’s been maintaining between 1160g and 1180g. She is eating steadily and I am topping her up with critical care.

She’s stopped gagging and rubbing her face so 🤷‍♀️

I weighed her this morning and she lost 33g 😩 and she gagged a few times as well so I’m keeping a close eye on her. She has gone into heat though and chasing Pip so that could be a reason for a little weight loss as well. She is just nibbling food this morning. Going and coming back to it. I’m at work but I’ve got a family member keeping an eye on her
