Hi! I recently adopted a sweet little lady piggy who has very long hair. She's only four months old (according to previous owner) but her bum hair was long enough to drag behind her like a little train! (I trimmed it so it doesn't drag). I'm wondering, for her comfort during gooming and also for aesthetic reasons, if there are tricks to grooming long haired piggies? I think she's a Peruvian. She has rosettes along her back that make her hair switch directions, and at the very end of her she has a tuft of hair that wants to stick straight up like a little flag! I have been using a plastic comb with a wide-tooth side and a slightly finer side, as it helps detangle and remove mats gently.

Welcome to world of grooming struggles ! My boy Goliath is a Peruvian and he requires daily brushing so he doesn't get matted ! I find Peruvians very vocal and loud and he hates being brushed ! What I have done is cut the hair right back over his bum as this was just getting really wet , then trimmed the sides so it's not dragging over the floor I use also a grooming tool for pigs that's a metal wider tooth comb that I bought from pets at home , I also use a old toothbrush for brushing his face (which also acts a distraction which he likes to chew )

I've always found that slicker brushes work best with long haired piggies. I do through with a plastic toothed one first as the teeth are wider. Then a metal one. The metal is very soft and springy to doesn't dig into the piggies at all. The reason I do this is because with some piggies their coats are so dense that the plastic combs and brushes don't seem to get through their hair properly. Just skim over the top. I would also say that if you are not to concerned about her having fabulously long hair then buy a decent pair of grooming/barbering scissors and keep the hair trimmed so it's always just above the floor. I've also always given my long haired piglets and undercut around their bums.

They are all colossal drama queens though. I've had ones that scream the place down as soon as the brush touches them.

@zombieprincess I don't suppose you have a link to your brushes? I had been intending on getting normal coated piggies, but in the end I've got one which is apparently "medium haired" (seems very long to me!).

Sure these aren't the exact brushes I have but all the same style.

Plastic toothed slicker

Metal toothed slicker
I have a "self cleaner" as getting the hair out can be a right pickle. My cat loves being brushed by this as well. She goes all floppy.

All rubber brush not so good for long hair but good for shedding dead hairs on short coats.

Also I'd recommend getting a toothbrush for grooming under chins and around faces :)

a bent pin slicker is the best, if you use a straight pin, it will just glide over the knots and matts, where as a bent pin is designed to catch the knots and loosen and remove them, and then use a metal comb after, combing over the area you've just brushed to check for any knots you've missed.
also line brush, part the hair at the bottom going across then brush, once that area is knot free move up a layer and repeat.
I'm a pet groomer so deal with this on a daily basis. what i told you is what i tell my customers all the time x :)
