Guinea pig bladder issues and penis issue

It’s 8.20 pm so I thought I’d give an update

9.00 am tomorrow we are booked for x rays and alternative pain management depending on findings.

Bayril and Metacam administered.

I’ve been feeding critical care on and off all day - some better than others, with filtered water and then probiotic two hours after the baytril in a syringe.

He’s been eating some hay himself and still keen in the main for the lettuce cucumber and pepper.

Enjoyed the grass gave today - just one lot.

Stan still squeaking when going to the loo but he’s currently eating hay and seems relatively comfortable between toileting.

Poop is small but well formed. Wee still flowing but there is blood.

The vet said at four years he should be ok to have an op As he’s still a reasonable weight. We should know more tomorrow.

Many thanks for the support today - you’ve been amazing and helped me to clear some of the anxiety.

I'm glad he is doing ok.

Poop will be small if he hasn’t quite had enough food in the past couple of days. Poop output is 1-2 days behind food intake (eg so small poop today means not enough food yesterday/the day before; normal sized poop Thursday will mean he got enough food Tuesday and Wednesday) so is not a reliable gauge of food intake (hence the importance of weight checks).

Keep going with the feeding and let us know how things go with the vet this morning

I’m glad he is on dog version.

All you can do now is keep up with plenty of syringe feeding to stop further weight loss and wait for the vet to get back to you.
Thank you for everything you’ve made things so much clearer than they were - I’m just waiting on the critical care to expand to its max and I’ll start the volume you’ve suggested.

I’m beyond grateful for your help

We are back. The x-rays clearly show a bladder Stone which is going to be removed on Monday in the meantime they have given me some tramadol to have on top of the meta cam and baytril to try and get him more comfortable. I have talked through the before during and after and I can’t say I’m particularly confident he’ll come out the other side but I’ve got to try. His weight was 1290 g this morning before any food and I and keep that on him if I can. The cost by the time we are finished and he’s well (hopefully) will be about 2k so it’s not for the faint hearted for sure.

please keep Stan in your thoughts xxxand thanks again

I'm sorry to hear it is a stone, but at least you do now know what you are dealing with.

Lots of syringe feeding is needed between now and then to stop further weight loss

I’ve added our post op guide below to help further
Tips For Post-operative Care

Thank you we are in it ! After the gas for the xray he ate hay all the way home which was so nice to see - critical care administered when we got home and water and probiotic and his drug. Now sleeping in his cuddle sack with a heat block under - he has other options if he gets too warm. My camera click woke him!

We are home after Stan’s bladder stone removal - just one stone - photo attached. He’s not in a good way - very lethargic and sad. I’ve tried a little critical care and some water and put his eye lubrication in. At 8.00 I have to get his tramadol in him. He’s on heat which he can get off of he wants to but he’s facing in the way and it’s breaking my heart

Poor Stan. I hope he starts to perk up soon. When my Percy 🌈 had a stone removed the vet nurse said he should be up and walking around by the following afternoon. If you are worried about him then call them and ask their advice. He’s probably still under the influence of the anaesthetic. Sending healing vibes for a smooth recovery.

Thank you. She said he had to have two lots of reversal drugs which she said wasn’t uncommon when they are under for a long time. She said I have to try and feed him and get water in but when I tried when we got home he wouldn’t even chew ! I will try again at 8.00 and through the night. I assume Percy recovered ok ?

Hope the lovely Stan perks up soon. Thinking of you both

We have the medicine and eye drops in just after 8 and I’ve been slowly getting some critical care and water in. He’s still on my knee asleep but when he stirs I’ll give him a bit more and do his eyes again before I put him in his own bed. Thanks for the good wishes - it means a lot. What did scare me was the vet said stones can come back despite a very strict diet and he can’t be operated on again. I’m praying this is his one and only stone.

Try not to think about that too much for now as we can't control the future as such, focus on each day at the moment.
We are all here to advise on diet etc to reduce the risks as you move forward but for tonight let's just keep him fed and hydrated I will keep him and you in my prayers 🙏💐

Morning all

My gorgeous Stan ate and drank really well at the 3.00 am feed - I was amazed at how much he kept asking for bless him. Put more eye drops in and tucked him back into bed at 4.00.

This morning at 8.00 all medicine and eye drops and critical care and water - again asking for it but not as much as the 3.00 am. Ate some lettuce and cucumber and tucked up in the hay bed - his choice so maybe he will have a little nibble. I’ll let him have two or three hours nap time and then see if I can tempt him with another fresh bunch of hay and critical care. 😌 relieved he is feeling better x

Brilliant. That’s great. 😁

Another day post op and Stan is doing really well - still on all the medicine until at least tomorrows first follow up. His wound is clean and healthy. He’s up and about this morning getting back to his old self - eating hay and his little bit of veg. Critical care still going in as his appetite isn’t going to be great whilst on the tramadol but he’s certainly well on the way.

His weight was slightly less this morning but not major - just a few grams bit he’s bright and willing with the critical care and excited to see new hay.

I just want to talk a little about cost. without the prior appts for consultations, drugs and X-rays getting his operation cost us just over £1000 that included the procedure - 2 X-rays during the op, nurse care, in patient cost, more tramadol and metacam, 2 follow up appts after.

On top of this the initial appt and drugs, 2nd appt, 3rd appt for X-rays and tramadol another £415. The tramadol is a gift and really takes the edge of pain but it does slow the gut down!

Hrs absolutely worth it and I’m not complaining about either the cost or how we have been looked after. I just thought it was relevant to the post. The other option would be PTS and I was not prepared to even consider this when we had a chance.

Now we have to ensure he has the correct diet forever!

I’ll keep adding to the post as I hope it will help others in the same position.

As ever so grateful for the support here - you’re amazing

That's such a lovely update 😊

I'm so glad that Stan has an appetite and is behaving more normally. I'm sorry about the costs, vet's fees are very high now.

Here we are at Friday and thought I’d post an update. Stan is doing really well - this is day four postop. Yesterday evening was the last bayril and tramadol. No appearance of withdrawal symptoms today.

We are continuing with the metacam for the moment until check up Monday. The probiotics being administered in water via syringe will continue for another week.

He’s very much back to eating hay - Timothy, meadow and Cotswold sweet. He’s having piggy parcels urinary pellets but not many and a top up of critical care - offered this morning but refused but enjoyed it tonight. His weight is very slightly up hence keeping some critical care going in. Romaine, cucumber and red pepper also being enjoyed. First time in the indoor play area today as he’s been in bed/house rest and seems to be very happy. Eyes good and no more drops required unless they show dryness. All in all my little superstar is doing amazingly well.

Hope everyone’s piggies are doing well too

K

I’m so pleased he’s doing well. You’ve done brilliantly too. It’s not easy caring for a pooly piggy. 👍🏻

And to you too x reading your posts about night feeds I thought I know what that feels like and the utter despair when they don’t want it and the euphoria when they really want it x you’re doing grand
