Guinea pig bladder issues and penis issue

I thought this was worth documenting this morning on our little journey after bladder Stone removal a week ago today. We stopped the tramadol on Thursday night was the last dose and Stan was doing really well until yesterday and I wondered perhaps if he might be suffering from withdrawal. I did some research online and it is possible that he has withdrawal symptoms. We are off to the vet this morning for our first face-to-face checkup and I’m going to talk to her about this because literally before they put him on cold Turkey on Thursday, he had been on it for quite a few days before his operation.

He is doing a bit of teeth chattering and his appetite isn’t as great and he’s not so keen on his critical care so I think he’s feeling a little bit under the weather but will get all the usual things checked out and I’ll come back to you with an update.

I’d be interested to know if anybody else is guinea pig has suffered with withdrawl symptoms and how long it has taken to get through thank you.

It could also be because his pain has increased because he is on less pain medication. I don't know anything about withdrawal but hope he gets better soon.
Hi we are back.

He has blood in his urine shich may indicate his bladder lining where they took the stone off is sore or he may have damaged himself. He squeaked in the car when he did a wee. Back on baytril to be sure no infection although he’s been on it for quite a while only came off Thursday.

Back on the tramadol to get his pain under control again.

When we got home he had his medicines and then I offered critical care when he was very keen to have so I think the earlier Metacam had taken edge off. He was in the hay box having a munch and the. In his hidey with a heat pad underneath so fingers crossed 🤞

Thanks for the reply

Bless him. At least you have a plan 👍🏻
It feels like a big step back for us both - but no point looking back just to try and look forward. Hope your gorgeous piggy and you are ok - I read you’re night feeding I hope you get some rest x

I know what you mean about a step back. Maybe a small one ❤️. Hopefully a bit more Baytril and pain meds will sort it out. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

I don’t work and my kids have moved out so I have time for the feedings thankfully. I worry about affording another op if he needs it though. It’s made me question keeping piggies. It will be a sad day if I don’t have them. Maybe I’ll look into insurance with my next ones. 🤷🏻‍♀️

That’s good you are getting some rest. I know cost is staggering isn’t it. I haven’t looked at insurance but I may well do although the bladder stone op is a once only op but I am scared going forward with waffles

For insurance you need to know the piggies age fairly accurately. Mine are of indeterminate age 😉 so saving for medical care where possible is all we have.

Morning all

Stan perked up with the addition of the tramadol and Baytril on top of Metacam. He weighed 8g up this morning which almost made me weep.

What I did notice last night and would appreciate comment is there is yellow on the pads - they get changed twice a day and I noticed it last night and this morning so took photo. I have sent to vet this morning. This is overnight pads.

Thanks so much hope everyone’s piggies are well

Yay. Hoorah for weight gain and a happier piggy. Not really sure about the stains but I hope the vets have an idea.

In the hope of finding something that would tempt stand to eat a bit more I found these pure Timothy hay cubes from Small pet select and they seem to be a hit.

In the Parcel with full samples complementary dried tomato, apple sticks, pea flakes and dried banana. I am not sure if Stan would be allowed any of these with the situation in his bladder and going forward if anybody has any advice that would be absolutely smashing thank you.

I think they are ok for his bladder but are very high sugar. Make sure they don’t upset his tummy. The cubes are fine.

I’ve just googled and yup all bad for my piggies ! I’ll donate them

I give mine pea flakes. Just not too many. Have you tried Stan with them before?

Hi Weeps

Hope all ok with you - I’ll catch up with your posts in a minute.

Just back from the vet check up. She’s really pleased with him and her words - we are nearly there!

Staying on Baytril for another week as slight trace of blood in urine just to be sure.

Tramadol full dose for another week and then down to one dose a day in the morning and if he copes and stays stable we can finish in another 3-4 days after that and the Metacam a few days after that.

He’s putting on weight up to 1183g this morning and no critical care yesterday and he’s eating lots and lots of hay.

So all in all gold star for Stan, we thanked the vet for saving him and she said that we have been amazing nursing him which has really given him the best chance. So team Stan are all feeling very happy today.

Thanks for asking - off to find your update

Wow. That’s an amazing update. I’m so pleased for you (it’s been hard for you I know). What a little trooper Stan is. Such a relief that all of your hard work has helped Stan. He’s gorgeous.

Thank you now all we need to do is get your Pebbles back up and running full steam and we will all be happy. Thanks for your support - it's been amazing.

Thank you. Glad I could help a tiny bit. 😊

Stan needs to have a word with Pebble. Give him some tips.

Hello everyone and very sorry for not giving an update until now. My Village is struggling with flooding and we have been helping with traffic management and repairs, et cetera. Please excuse any bad grammar because literally my brain is noodles after three days of not much sleep and a lot of wading in wellies. Our house thankfully is fine but some of the old cottages in the Village are struggling badly.

But I do have fantastic news about Stan. He is now medication free his weight is stable at just over 1200 g. He is a very happy and healthy Pig and his urine is very good and not showing very much calcium stain at all.

Just for your information and for everyone going through this situation, I basically did another week of antibiotics Baytril. I then reduced the tramadol dose to half of what he was getting which was quarter of a tablet twice a day so I reduced it to an eighth. I weaned him off over a three day period while still administering the same dose of meta cam 0.75 of a mill and after the tramadol wean off, I continued with the meta cam just for a couple of days and then stopped that. The tramadol does give them a dry mouth and I was a bit concerned about the increased drinking but since coming off the tramadol, his drinking level is back to normal and a healthy amount. Urine output is great and he is a very vocal very happy pig.

Diet wise we are sticking to Timothy, Cotswold and Meadow hay vegetable wise romaine lettuce, cucumber and red pepper which I split up into two is one in the morning and one in the evening. Treat wise the only thing he is having is pure Timothy hay cubes.

I hope this is helpful for anyone going through the same situation as Stan and I wish you all the best and please do message me if you have any questions because without this forum answering my questions in my hour of need I would’ve been in even more of a mess than I was, and I’m so so grateful.

Sending hugs

That’s fabulous news that Stan is doing so well. 🎉🎉

I’m so sorry about your village. The weather has been really bad recently
