hi all, my last post was about my guinea pig purring when i gave him back scratches. sadly you guys told me those were scared noises!

i came in earlier to check on him (as of right now, he is alone and won't have a buddy until tomorrow) and saw him breathing like this.

is this just deep breathing from possibly being scared of when i walked in the room, or should i be worried? he is a pet store piggie, so i'm a little concerned maybe he came to me sick.

other than the breathing, he sneezes now and again, but other than that he looks and seems okay. (aside being a little spooked by being in a new home)

thanks in advance!

Yes there are problems; it is a possible URI. I wouldn't wait to get this little one treated. Which pet store-petco or petsmart? Petsmart will get the little one to their vet and you can talk to petco on their policy but they also have a vet and will give you options. Mine came from a pet store locally as well here; one with some problems. It's critical to catch this as soon as possible. It can be days before she will show more symptoms then this and it can be easy to miss until too late. Good eye catching it early enough.

oh! also, do you know if aspen wood bedding is okay for piggies? i was also told that, but then maybe that's what started this URI... i hope it's not my fault!

Honestly this is on the pet store. Of all the stores around me; my experience is petsmart is the one that cares the most. I've worked with the one here on an issue with one of their guinea pigs and the manager still contacts me about ones that need to be adopted from the local rescue they deal with. She and another manager have spoken at length with me candidly about the problems they find at the store and tell customers. My biggest contention is the cages and they agree. I know you have a guarantee on your baby for 30 days. They will have their vet look at him. Honestly, take him back and just tell them your concerns. They are more then aware that sometimes they can have a sick guinea pig sold and really do everything they can to help but he needs to get back there today, if possible.

I am a huge fan of the cavy cages and fleece lining. I have kitchens at the ends which I made sort of litter boxes from the chloroplast that I stock up on from home depot. This contains the bedding I use and it works well to keep the rest of the cage more manageable. Aspen should be fine-some use even newspaper for their cages. I use the soft bedding but of course I only us a small part of the cage for this so it's not so costly. It can become more costly then aspen for sure; especially if used in the entire cage. I have a much larger cage downstairs here for the girls but my daughter has one boar kept in hers and we are just finishing up with this one in the added touches. The one we have for her pumpkin is really perfect for him. I have a basic fleece in this one but am sewing some full fleece pads to use this weekend (have been waiting on the bulk of material to get here). You can be really simple. Ignore the room please-just finished having a wall added to split one room into two.

Let us know how things are going with him. IMG_20180506_110521.webp
