I tried calling vets to preface but there are no nearby exotic vets available at 3am, she broke out and got in a fight with another guinea pig and i can see a scar across her eye, she was whimpering and twitching now shes just twitching, with her head leaning to the side, and I'm wondering what i can do?

I’m sorry to hear this.

Please do see a vet urgently. She sounds to be in pain (head tilt).

You do not have to see an exotic vet given eyes are the same across all species - any vet can deal with it today (as an emergency at any time of day or night in the UK - all UK vets have out of hours cover).

As far as home care, all you can do is switch to weighing her each morning and step in with syringe feeding (she is likely to stop eating hay or reduce the amount she eats in response to the injury and pain) to prevent stasis.

I hope she is ok

Good luck to your guinea girl.

I presume you're in Edmonton, Canada? Not Edmonton, London, England?
There must be a vet open on Saturday in Edmonton, Canada - big city. Please let us know how you got on and how your guinea is doing.

This is a follow-up to my other post where my guinea pig got her eye scratched the only vet i could reach today has seen guinea pigs but he's not specialized in them.. the exotic vets open on monday, but he gave me "neomycin polymyxin b" and i was wondering if this is safe? for guinea pigs, he said to only use it if her eye crusts up and dries up.. anyways this is how she looks atm

I’ve merged your post back with your original thread to keep everything together. Please do keep to this one thread so all background is in one place.

These are antibiotic drops.

I’m confused - Why have they said to only use it IF the eye crusts and dries up?
Does that mean she currently isn’t getting any medication (because the eye looks moist at present)?
This needs prompt treatment with an antibiotic - eye injuries deteriorate quickly so only treating IF something happens (and really this already looks like a nasty injury so needs treatment) makes something going wrong with the eye more likely.

She also must have painkillers. Did she get prescribed a good dose of twice a day painkillers also?
While any vet can deal with eye injuries, you do need the vet to have some knowledge, or be prepared to research, on the higher levels of pain meds that piggies can tolerate compared to other species.

I agree with @Piggies&buns, she should be on some painkillers and antibiotics at the very least, now.
As to whether they're safe, I could say, sorry. Poor girl must be in a lot of pain. Could you call the vet back and ask them to prescribe some pain relief?

yes that's what he said, which confused me too,, I'm in Virginia most of the clinics here cater to dogs and cats, the exotics have no emergency hours, she's currently not on any antibiotics or painkillers because i wasn't given any, and neither is she on the polymycin, not yet anyways.. he told me just to a keep an eye on it for now, which i dont agree with so that's why tomorrow ill be getting in touch with different clinics. But i agree, i think she should be on pain killers and antibiotics

I am stunned that the vet has left this untreated. I can appreciate that they may not be piggy specialist but they don’t need to be to be able to treat an injured eye - eyes are the same across all species.

Please do urgently get in touch with a vet as soon as you can. Eyes require treatment within 24 hours so it is so important that this is treated asap.

In the meantime, given she is likely to be in pain and pain can cause all sorts of issues with piggies, please switch to emergency care.
Switch from the routine weekly weight checks and instead with her daily (each morning) so you can ensure she is still eating enough hay. They can reduce their intake without you knowing (hay intake can’t be gauged by eye) and then require syringe feeding.
All the emergency guides I added in my first post explain further.

I hope she is ok
