Advice needed please! We have 2 girl guinea pigs around 2 or 3 (unsure as rehomed) & they have got hay mites! This is the second time they’ve had them, when we got them in February they came with the mites. We bathed them & put treatment on and thought that would be it but now we’ve noticed again when brushing them! Planning on getting treatment again but is there anything we can do to prevent this? Should we use a prevention treatment? We clean them out weekly & use sawdust + hay in their cage. Any advice would be great! Thanks - Kerry.

I’m sorry to hear this. Hay mites come in on hay so changing your hay source can help but it isn’t a guarantee.
Ensure you see a vet to get proper prescription strength treatment to treat it. Using anything you can buy from a pet shop will not get rid of mites as they are far too low dosed to be effective.

Please do not use a preventative treatment, only ever treat an active case with a proper prescription strength treatment . Using low dosed products as a preventative can mean that resistance forms so when you do have an active case, the correct treatment is less effective.

Sadly, there isn't much you can do to prevent them as they come in on the hay :( All you can do is treat them with products prescribed by a vet if your piggies are unlucky enough to get them. There is no prevention treatment that would work
