Hi

I am struggling with finding a suitable hay rack for my boys, the one that came with the cage they seem to go behind and get stuck, the one from pets at home they climb on top of and it tips over.. I have a spare ikea spice rack which would be perfect to sit in the cage but I'm unsure if it needs to be a certain type of wood incase they chew it.. Can anyone help?

Thanks
Faye

What type of wood is it? If it's cedar or air-dried pine stay clear away. Health complications will occur if these are used and the guinea pig becomes curious about it. Just stay away from softwood.

Most hardwood such as aspen, poplar, etc are safe and are the safest bet. Next is fruit tree wood but there are some you must avoid (all from the Prunus family). All wood treated with dangerous pesticides are off-limits.

edit- According to the IKEA website it is pure birch and birch is safe for guinea pigs :)

I use the trixie hay manger (it is a wire hay rack) 12cm for my three pigs. It costs £5.49 on amazon. You screw it to the wall so there is no chance of a piggy going behind it. It looks quite small but you can stuff a lot of hay in it. Also, i refill mine twice a day although I don't often need to because I hide hay in other places for them to find and eat. This is worth the money.

Its £5.85 on amazon but £1.99 on zoo plus so I would go for that one

We have a plastic mess free cage so there isn't anywhere to connect anything. Would I be best contacting ikea to see if it has been treated before I put it in?

Think I'll try the Trixie one too. I've got P@H wooden one but often go through and find it collapsed from them climbing on it. Also Flower loves to sleep lying right underneath it, despite there being 3 houses for them to sleep in.
