I've recently switched to getting my hay from Haybox (they absolutely love it) but I love a bargain and decided I simply had to get the largest amount as it was the best value...now I have three massive 5kg cardboard boxes sat in the spare room of my fairly small flat 😅
Not like we will have any guests any time soon anyway with COVID... but I've been thinking of ways to store it to make things a bit more aesthetically pleasing! From my understanding hay should be kept in a 'cool' dry place but it to be inside as I have no garden so spare room it is. I also know it lasts best in a breathable container so that rules out my original idea of plastic bins. Now I'm wondering about those fabric under-bed storage 'boxes' you can get for clothes? Then I could put the hay out of sight under the bed and seeing as those bags are designed to stop clothes gong mouldy I assume they're fairly breathable? I think they're normally made of cardboard and polyester
Here's a link to show what I mean:

Do you think this is a good idea or am I not considering something? Is it okay for the hay to be on the floor like that?
Any other suggestions welcome 😀

I think it's a good idea if it works for you! I've seen lots of people using large plastic containers for the hay. I guess, just check that it stays fresh for them. Any signs of mould etc, and it should be removed. And I suppose it also depends on how much mess you are willing to clean up in the bedroom, as careful as I am with hay, it still seems to follow me around the house 🙈

As my guinea pigs have taken over my spare room, I'm always looking for storage solutions for all of their stuff!

i use plastic containers for all my hay one the bag it comes in is opened up (its kept in the garage up to this point which is dark and cool)... it stays fresh in the boxes and to be honest isnt in them long lol... greedy pigs...

I keep my 50 lbs of hay in a plastic bin and it didn't get moldy at all.

Thank you all, I've accepted a life of hay everywhere now 😅 I might keep a smaller box right next to the cage and decant into it once a week or something to avoid having to pull it all out from under the bed every day 👍

We live in a flat two we have two large plastic IKEA boxes and a small one, the two big ones live in a cupboard and the small one under the cage, you roughly need around 2 boxes and a small one per 5kg so with your 15kg I would say you need about 7 boxes and a small one! We buy it in 5kg at a time as I can’t deal with having it everywhere 😂

Thanks! That's really helpful, how big are those boxes roughly? I think I may need to switch to 5kg next time 😬

Thats what I do... i used to keep it in my utility room and it ended up everywhere! Now it's under the cage and it keeps it contained.... you will still find it odd times in random places tho 🤣🤣🤣

It's like glitter isn't it 😂 I've turned up to work before then realised I have guinea pig hairs and hay on me 😳 Going to become the crazy guinea pig lady soon...
