Hi all,

My skinny pig is on Baytril for a toe infection that is taking very long to go away. He is 1,095kg and is on Baytril 10% oral. The vet prescribed 0,1ml once a day. I am concerned that this is not enough to kick the infection in the butt. He was on antibiotic injections for 5 days and is now on the oral antibiotic. From everything I have searched and the calculators you get I've seen that he should get 0,1ml every 12 hours not every 24 hours. Is there anyone who could give some advice on how much he can and should be getting. I will be going to the vet and asking if he can get more, I just want to know what other people think as this is the first time at this vet, I've not had the best of luck with vets.

We can’t give advise on dosages as we aren’t vets, but your dose is low.
Do speak to the vet about increasing it if the infection isn’t improving

Thank you, that's all I wanted to know. I wouldn't increase it without the vets approval I just wanted to know if I was right in thinking it could be higher.

10% baytril is higher strength than piggies usually get prescribed I think, our last baytril prescription was 2.5%, but the dose was 0.5mls twice a day (for a 1.2kg piggy).
So your dose is certainly in a similar range, allowing for your baytril being 4x more concentrated, but perhaps you could ask the vet whether twice a day may be better, given how fast piggies metabolise many medicines.
