Hello all. I am in a bit of a predicament! I have had some piggies for over a year now and my husband has suddenly developed a wheezy chest, difficulty breathing, runny nose and watery eyes. He has gone to the DRs and they have diagnosed him with an allergic reaction to "something", and they are suspicous of my piggies. :(

Has anyone else had some experience with this? I recently changed my piggie's hay so I am very suspicious of this but don't want to rule anything out!

The last thing I want is to have to give my two piggies up! Anyone with any advice or experience about piggie allergies please get in touch! Thank you xx

My OH is allergic to hay rather than piggies and I had to change my hay brand to one that was less dusty to ease his suffering! Fortunately he takes antihistamines everyday during the summer anyway and manages during the winter now I’ve swapped hay.

Do his symptoms get worse if he handles the pigs? Does he have any other allergies?

I am allergic to guinea pigs, but run a guinea pig sanctuary. I have found that I need to take antihistamines on clean out days and when new piggies arrive. I do think it is the hay that causes the biggest problem as I become quite wheezy when carrying a bale of hay in the car. I have to be careful not to touch my eyes after handling the piggies, or I end up with itchy, swollen eyes. There is generally a way around the issue. Do you have a spare room, garage or shed they could be moved to?

I was allergic to their hay and the we switched brands.
Perhaps it could be the new hay and not the piggies

My OH is alergic to timothy hay but not so bad with meadow. I make sure I change/top up hay boxes whe he's not in the house (he loves the excuse to go to his shed!). He also gets an itchy rash on any bare skin that touches Spike if he doesn't wash immediately he puts him down, he's ok touching the others.

Only if he's very bad, not very often. The piggys are in our living room and he doesn't seem to be too bad with meadow hay if he stays away while it's fresh and the piggys are burrowing in it. He only holds Spike while I cut his nails, lap time he will cuddle a different pig, I always have Spike.

Someone suggested we should move the pigs into a shed. OH has built himself one he can carve bits of wood and make stuff without me complaining about the mess. It's a win win all round, I threaten to change the hay and he goes to the shed. The piggys get to stay indoors entertaining me!

:agr:get rid of husband not piggies ,because it's not guinea pigs fault ,it's the hay because it's like grass pollution it upsets people's asthma
