Illness Again.... Poor Piggies!

The plot thickens what ever she had is resistant to four antibiotics & is normally found in sheep? unfortunately the three ones normally used in guinea pigs are also resistant. The vet offered to give me antibiotics but said I would have to inject her daily. I said I wasn't comfortable doing that as I didn't want to injure her! Vet agreed she seemed a well piggy she is so much brighter and the lump has gone very small. She has advised me to keep feeling the lump monitoring her weight as I have been and also watch for any signs of teeth grinding etc..

I keep thinking I should have agreed to antibiotics but all I kept thinking was she seems to be better, I don't want to potentially harm her if she doesn't really need it, but am I harming her by not doing it.

This is what she had apparentally, I wonder if I got some bad hay and it transmitted it to her?

No but the Seperin and Zithomax and baytrill are all resistant (I'm making these names up lol hoping you know what I mean)

She said there were only 4 antibiotics left which are not really safe for pigs. the one she offered was not an oral drug so I would have to administer via syringe and needle and I was not keen on it as I have never injected anything in my life and feel like injections should only be done by trained nurses / doctors / vets etc.. now I wish I had done some sort of small animal / guinea pig course so I would be able to do it! Is it something you have ever been asked to do @helen105281

I haven't yet but am sure Alisont has with her late rabbit. The vet can show you how to do it but if you are not confident then it may be best not to.

I think she was just asking incase I had experience in it as she was surprised with my knowledge and the fact that I knew a seemingly well guinea pig was ill. It also seems weird to vets when you know how to syringe feed and do it prior to them suggesting and also you have spare metacam at home :))

She described it as you would know by picking up your animal that it felt lighter etc... but I bet a man would need it's leg to be hanging off with blood spurting out :))

Also she said that luckily the choking thing was only very small as I noticed the issue before it got that bad.

Just weighed Lacey again she's upto 960gms but the lump appears to have grown :( I don't know what to do as only antibiotics available to treat this are by injection only, which would mean me having to inject her daily. I was hoping she would just get better on her own. Think I am going to have to suck it up and go back and ask for injections. I thought she was doing so well!

I think once you know how to do it it's ok, though saying that if I had to I would most likely get the OH to be the one doing it.

How long ia the antibiotic injection course? Is there no way your vet could keep hold of her for the course of treatment? I know most vets will do this for a small fee(i know mine will) ...its always worth asking...x

Are you close enough to get to the vets each day for an injection possibly?
its about 40 mins away as it is a "good" piggy vet. I have a nearer one that I use for less complex things like hay pokes etc... but she may need another operation to drain so I'd rather go to the good piggie vet first, rather than the "general" vet I use. It is not urgent as she is eating fine still and I have metacam so started her on that again today. I will be going on Monday to see them.

Quick update Lacey is doing great. Vet found an antibiotic which was not an injectable one. It is tablets used in birds called oxycare. It was a nightmare of crushing mixing and try to get all the little bits in but well worth it as now her lump has completely gone. All thats left is the stitches which are still not completely melted!

She's going to be monitored by me for weigh gain as she was just under 900gm today but she's been using extra energy to get well so its to be expected really.
