About a year ago now, I took my little Samantha to my vet, and he diagnosed her with a small fungus infection.

We laid 80$ for a cream. I applied it every day as instructed, but a week later my little Samantha has passed away in my arms.

Do you guys think the vet was inexperienced? Because she was obviously very sick.

Ahhh I’m sorry for the loss of Samantha. I’m not experienced enough to tell if the vet was right or wrong I’m afraid. But here in UK these lovely little animals are classed as exotic and so it’s important to find a piggy savvy vet. Guinea pigs also hide their illnesses so well as they’re prey animals. So maybe she was more sick than anyone could realise. Xx

I am very sorry for you loss! It is impossible to for us to say whether it was a misdiagnosis or a sad coincidence without any particular details.
Was Samantha showing any signs of being severely ill when you had her seen, and if yes, what were they? How long have you had her and how old was she? Did she have a bald, crusty patch that was clearly fungal but no other symptoms?

A fungal infection can be a sign of a depressed immune system, without it necessarily being obvious what is going on. Guinea pigs are prey animals and very good at hiding their illness. They can also die very suddenly and quickly without showing any sign of illness.

Guinea pigs do not feature large on a general vet's curriculum. If you want more expertise, then you need to see an exotics vet. There are unfortunately not all that many in Canada, and they are anything but cheap.

I'm sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, it's impossible to say exactly what happened. Prey animals are conditioned to hide illness well (because sick prey animals are picked off first.) Guinea pigs may not show symptoms until they are severely ill and their symptoms can progress in a hurry. The last two guinea pigs I lost went from seemingly normal to passing away within 24 hours, so it really can be that quick (and they did see an experienced vet during that day.)
I'm also in Canada, and here the term to look for when shopping for a vet is that they see 'exotics.' You can then call and ask how much experience they have with guinea pigs. There are good exotics vets out there, but you may have to shop around a bit and ask some questions to find one.
