Hello, I have two baby boars about 7 months and after removing their hay rack, hay is now on the floor, due to someone's suggestion they are eating like crazy. I just bought a big 96 oz bag like 3 days ago and its halfway gone. Is that good? Is that healthy to eat so much? They make me feel guilty when they wheek at me and bite on the cage hopefully that I will give more veggies/fruits/pellets ( one just wants me to hand feed them hay which is so cute) even if they have hay. Is the hay not filling them up? Is there something wrong with it? I know people say unlimited hay but you have to wonder how those tiny bodies can pack it away.
 
Yes it is filling them up and yes it’s healthy. Hay keeps the gut functioning correctly and keeps their teeth wearing down. Without enough hay they lose weight and run the risk of dental and gut problems, so no there is no such thing as too mich!
However you cannot judge hay intake by eye so do ensure you weigh your piggies weekly to ensure they are putting on weight.
 
Definitely no such thing as too much hay! Piggies will always wheek and beg for treats even when they arent hungry, once you leave the room they will happily go back to hay munching!
You might think about chopping some of their daily veg into small pieces and scattering it amongst the hay pile, that's a great source of entertainment for them and encourages natural foraging behaviour where they nose and root around for the veg while grazing on the hay :)
 
Hello all thanks! I just was double checking to make sure they weren't over eating, it just seemed like so much food for such a tiny tummy.

Ps- sorry I just realized I never actually hit post and its been sitting on my phone, lol
 
Hay is rubbish in terms of nutrient value so they need massive amounts to extract anywhere near what they need from it. That’s how they have evolved to live though so just go with it!
 
One thing that I've learnt when it comes to guinea pigs, hay=life the more the merrier.

My 2 piggies which are 10 weeks old have got through 50oz in a week so yours are perfectly ok. Make sure they never run out of hay.
