I have a 4 1/2 year old guinea pig named Jack. He has a follicular/keratin cyst on his back. It’s grown quite large and keeps getting bigger. I took him to the vet yesterday after it started bleeding. The vet advised having it surgically removed. He said he could also drain it, but this may be too painful for Jack and the cyst could also come back. I’m looking for some encouragement as I’m pretty stressed and worried for him. The surgery is booked for Wednesday (January 21st). He is otherwise healthy.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I’m sorry Jack has a cyst and needs an operation.

As it’s growing and bleeding then I agree it probably needs to be removed. Is your vet knowledgeable with piggies? It would be a quick procedure and not very invasive so the outcome should be good.

Obviously there are risks with any anaesthetic. But as long as your vet is confident then it should be fine.

Good luck.

Thank you for the reply! Yes, he is an exotic vet. He said “Saying everything will be fine is unprofessional, there are risks. I recommend the surgery for him.” He said he can hold the cyst up and it’s not attached to anything, so that’s good news.

The procedure itself is 40 minutes.

I have a piggy with a cyst. It’s not growing so we can leave it for now. But you have to solve your piggies cyst as it’s growing and bleeding. It’s always a bit scary when they are poorly but it can’t be left as it will become infected and the problem will get more serious. Sending you hugs. ❤️

Yes I definitely want it removed no matter what. It was more a question of surgery or draining it. I feel like surgery is the better option, it’s just the anesthesia risk that worries me. Thank you for your replies. They have made me feel much better 😌 that’s good. Not all of them grow really big. I had a female guinea pig with a smaller cyst, it did grow, but it was able to be drained and did not bleed. It was less severe than his.
