Hello!
I hope you can help me - I've just been into my piggies before work and it looks like someone's been murdered! Checked all piggies over and they all seem fine, no wounds or stains on their fur.
The blood is splattered on paper I give them to chew and is purpley in colour. They haven't had anything that colour to eat.
The only possible reason I can think of is that they attacked a mouse trying to steal their food? We have a mouse problem which I'm trying to sort out humanely and the mice do eat apple which was in their cage last night. I just can't imagine the piggies being so aggressive?
Has anyone else had anything like this or seen piggies attack mice?

Pop each piggy against your chest and check their bits.. Whoever has orange or red stained bits is likely the culprit. In that case I'd take them to the vet tomorrow for treatment granted they are still okay in themselves (weight etc).

If you don't know the culprit place each pig individually on a white pad or towel in a box with a hidey and some munchables, until they wee so you can find out who has the issue.

Good luck x

My neighbors Doe rabbit had something similar I think? There was lots of reddy/dirty water in her cage and they couldn't figure out what it was. It was soaking through her bedding and staining the wooden floor. Vet said it could be her urine from her food (with colourants in it) or just something to do with her pee. They had her spayed and I don't think it happened again. It was a while ago so shaky on the details.

Thank you, I have checked their bits and none of them are stained. I had thought it could be blood in the urine but really there is too much of it and it is thick drops of blood, no dilution with urine. The closest I've seen to it before was when I had baby pigs, with the placenta etc. They are all 5 years old so I don't think it can be that one has been pregnant. I cleaned out the cage when I got home and still no sign of a clue? They are all acting normal, I will weigh them all tomorrow.

If you can't find an obvious cause and all your piggies are acting normally, eating, drinking and toileting fine then I would just keep a close eye on them for symptoms/ more blood. It could be something that is random and will never happen again, but always better to be safe than sorry.

I would honestly check them both for UTI if it happens again. Sundae has chronic bladder issues and has certainly peed blood that does not look diluted with urine and is more than you would expect when she has had an infection/cystitis from her bladder stone.

Yeah, I was going to say; I don't have any experience so far with piggy health issues, but if this was any other species I would be doing urine tests asap. Dipsticks for urine testing are cheap and non-invasive, so there's not much of an argument against just double checking.

Also, it's worth noting that there can be blood in urine that isn't visible to the human eye. So with urine-based issues, just because it looks like there is no longer blood, doesn't mean this is actually the case.

My Parsley has bladder issues at the moment and is currently at the vets following bladder surgery today.I found lots of blood in his cage on Tues evening-non of which was diluted and no visible blood on him and took him to the OOH vets.It was a bladder stone and sludge.I would certainly get your piggy vet checked.just for piece of mind.

Hope your pigs are OK.
I had mice in and about my old pigs' hutch and for the most part there were no issues, but the younger pig did bite the tail of one of the mice! I found a tail lying in the hutch and a piggy with a bloody chin! Didn't put the mouse off visiting!
