hey everyone. haven't been on in a while. hope you're all ok.

maisie was squeaking in pain and straining and hunching so we went to the vets and she has cystitis. she's also down at 890g, which is very low for her. :(

she's now on metacam for a week, and septrin for three weeks, so hopefully that will help and she will better again and nothing else is going on.

apart from the pain when passing urine, she is still fairly bright in herself. she takes meds well and she has still got her appetite so that's good.

fingers crossed she starts to feel more comfortable soon.

Fingers firmly crossed! You can also help with feeding mildly diuretic foods during the first 2-3 days to flush the bladder and relieve the acute symptoms. Dandelion, cucumber and lettuce can help with that. make sure that she'd got plenty to drink and a bit more extra juicy veg.

Hello, Nice to see you back! Poor Maisie, Hopefully the Meds will get to work quickly. The Metacam will help her with the pain. Lots of love and healing vibes to her. How is Crazy Eddie?

thanks.

she's been resting and is a bit quiet but enjoyed her tea. she had lettuce and cucumber so that works out well if they help with this sort of thing. she drinks quite alot and always has so i think that will help alot aswell.

crazy eddie is still doing very well. he's such a lovely boy. more vocal now aswell which is so funny, and he adores maisie so much. they adore each other actually and spend lots of time nuzzling each other and they sleep side by side which is adorable.

will keep you updated anyway. x

maisie already seems brighter. she's not liking the septrin now though which is surprising because she loves the smell of banana. when o/h opens one, she wheeks really loudly and comes running over to beg. :)) she likes her metacam and drinks that from the syringe.

she's so sweet. she loves praise and cuddles after. she really is such a sweet girl. i absolutely adore her. :luv:

eds was funny. he likes to be out on the settee with us and when maisie is done and having cuddles, he comes over, nuzzles her face and purrs and then does pops because he is so excited to be with her. :luv:

i know i always say it but i really am so happy with how much they adore each other. such a good match. :luv:

Great news to hear she is feeling a bit better, lots of continued vibes to her. Lol at Crazy Eddie! Every pig I've ever met loves their metacam

we have a huffy miss maisie here at meds time. she's decided she will not be forced to have any meds... so she ended up with her metacam in some cucumber, and her septrin in some mashed banana. :)) hopefully she will be less huffy at the next meds time.

also, my piggy weighing scales chose today to stop working so now i need to get some new ones.

but apart from that....!

well miss madam here has figured out that her septrin is in the banana, which is madness because it smells the same! so i had to syringe it by mouth which she was rather huffy about! she was doing her best huffy impression but it just made me laugh because i've never seen her be grumpy and defiant! anyway, got there eventually and she forgave me when offered a tasty reward. and i always think it's a good thing when they fight against you a bit, because it means they're feeling better and have some fight.

she is looking lots brighter now and doesn't seem in any pain at all. i did try explaining to her that her bladder wall still needs longer to heal but she just looked at me like i was talking rubbish! :mal:

i'm glad she's much brighter though.

If you have something like Ribena around you can add that to the Septrin and it might help her take it easier. I had to do this with my Kasper since the vet said it is better that they drink it than it going into food, not sure why but that's what she said :S.

thanks for the tip. i think i'll try that. i did wonder if it wouldn't be as good in food. :)

When Eliza was in antibiotics it was my hubby who gave them her but he has a tighter grip than me to force the syringe in her mouth.

It was fibreplex I tried giving on a lettuce leave. Very unsuccessful...

my o/h would be useless. think i have a stronger grip :)) ...... i just told him what i said and he said this  has the same teeth as me! :)):)):))

anyway, will try some ribena next time i think. see if she approves. :))

o/h couldn't find any ribena when he went out today but he got some cranberry instead. would this be ok? it's the ocean spray one, not sweetened or anything like that.

maisie is soooo bright again now. amazing how quickly the meds work!

little update - maisie is doing really well. she prefers the meds syringed into the other side of her mouth than the side i was doing, so meds times are alot better now.

also got some new batteries for the scales so will weigh her tomorrow. i don't think she feels as boney but we'll see.

overall though, she's fine in herself. much, much better. x

Just an idea. I have found Cystease very useful for guineas susceptible to Cystitis. I have one who gets it every 12 months or so, badly, and as soon as she shows the signs I get her onto Cystease and also syringe water into her twice a day (15ml a time) to flush the bladder through. I believe the Cystease soothes the bladder wall and I had to say I have noticed its effects after a short time. Of course I still go the to vets do the meds etc but it can stop it from getting hold. Just a thought.

Glad she is feeling better though. x

thank you for this. i will definitely keep it in mind. she's never had cystitis before, but seems to be on the verge of getting a mild one from time to time. luckily she has managed to always keep it at bay, but she's getting older now and i was worried that this might be the start of her getting some slight health issues now. hopefully it's just a one off, but i'll make a note of this to mention to the vet if this happens again.

she's really happy today. took septrin fine, then drank the metacam and water from the syringe, then practically jumped up onto me for cuddles. so sweet. :luv:

Oh bless her! Sounds like a real cutey. I have had several susceptible to Cystitis over the years. Getting fluids in and flushing them out is the key and I just find the cystease supports them that bit better. A bit like people, some just seem to get it others don't. At least you know the signs and can get onto it straight away, thats the main thing.

sometimes i have thought she was going to get one, but then it would go away. but this time there was no mistaking the signs. i felt so sorry for her. it's awful to see them in pain isn't it. :( least she is on the mend now. well, you wouldn't even know now to be honest. she's acting normally but i think that will be the pain relief aswell. but the inflammation should have come down alot by now i would think.

will make a note of the cystease incase this happens again. :)

we took some pics. not very clear but i'll upload them later. she's so cute! and eds made an appearance in one pic aswell. :)) he licks her mouth after meds.
