Meet Edamame šŸ˜

It is so exciting when members get new piggies and we get to see their journeys, but it’s extra special when it’s a new baby piggy!

People from all over will be watching you grow up, little Ed!

The size difference is terrifying!

I found myself imagining bringing a baby home and Gaia just walking all over it or sending it flying across the cage in her haste to get to her morning pile of fresh grass. A daily scolding about 'trampling the baby' and Gaia shrugging her shoulders and saying the baby 'should learn to dodge.' I can't let Gaia have access to pups. 😳

I confess I have had similar thoughts šŸ˜… luckily Tofu is a slow, stately pig these days with his arthritis, and Ed has the baby zooms so he dodges out of the way with impressive dexterity. But I see them cuddled up together in the hidey and have to check that Edamame isn’t squished!

Gaia sounds an absolute character šŸ˜‚ if baby doesn’t want to get trampled then baby shouldn’t have stood in the pathway to food. Quite right

Aw, Ed is very proud to have an audience! He’s beginning to show his character by climbing up the bars and giving them a good nibble, despite barely being able to reach. I think he’s gonna be a future contender for club bar chew šŸ˜…

Fantastic! Sounds like Edamame is settling in very well.
He is so cute too, I love his colouring.

His colouring is so cute! I think he might secretly be tricolour, his tummy is a much lighter brown. Maybe ginger. He hasn’t let me get a proper look yet though, more time to trust us first

Here he is showing off his white back leg. He looks like a rabbit sometimes when he flashes it as he runs off šŸ˜‚

He is a cute chocolate coloured boy with his white accents anyway. ā¤ļø

He looks like a little piece of chocolate cake that has escaped with some of the icing still stuck to his feet and leg! :D Adorable!

I hope that Eddie is settling in well and that Tofu is enjoying his much busier life.

That is the best description šŸ˜‚ Tofu thinks he’s hit the jackpot. A snuggle buddy he can train! Eddie has started copying his body language at veggie time. Running up to the bars and emitting the loudest wheeks as soon as they hear me open the fridge. And they popcorn together ā¤ļø even arthritic Tofu gets a decent amount of height with a baby to compete with

Quite right, Tofu! You've got to train baby Eddie a bit. I'm sure he still loves you though.

I think they’re very fond of each other. Tofu is taking the opportunity to claim his stakes on the best nap spots while Ed is too small to challenge him though šŸ˜‚

Went exploring during this morning’s cage clean. They have been sharing hideys, but Tofu is starting to kick Ed out when he wants a break. Ed listens and runs off squeaking. Babies are so vocal šŸ˜‚

These photos of little Ed are really sweet. I love the middle one, where Ed is headed off and you can see two white paws.

I had an older sow with a baby sow, who got kind of sick of the vocals and attention-seeking and so ran like a battling ram into baby's ear. It looked pretty violent but didn't seem to cause any permanent problems and no visible injuries either. Baby Poppet was rather vocal about the battering ram too...

Tofu sounds kinder, I hope he can keep Ed in hand without resorting to battering rams etc.

My Telyn (June 2009-2011) had her nickname 'Harp' stuck as her official name for her exceptional loud voice, inability to shut up and a truly ear splitting wheek; her original name was Tegan 'Little Beauty'. Not even being chastened by my usually very patient first Tribe patriarch Llewelyn could shut her up for more than a minute or two!

When Telyn unexpectedly died from sudden acute heart failure just a few days after her second birthday (despite me racing her to my local vets within half an hour of finding her suddenly collapsed) - like most of the rescue born babies from a large RSPCA rescue haul from a neglect breeder involving several hundreds of rodents and ending in a court conviction - I named my new surprise baby just a few months later Tegan Syndod ('Little beautiful surprise) in her memory.

PS: As another unforeseeable blessing Telyn has been returned to me in the form of Blodyn 'Flower' over a decade later as one of the - still unseen - rescue born Cornish babies when I offered to adopt the whole family including any babies. My surprise baby Tegan (the baby in my avatar) had quite a striking similarity to my first ever own childhood piggy once her hair grew out, by the way...
Some things are obviously meant to be. Eddie will hopefully bring also back lots of happy little memories for you as he grows up.

Enjoy your little Bean full of beans. I am sure that Tofu also enjoys rediscovering his younger self. I have found it always so heart-warming when I saw my own arthritic oldies playing and popcorning with a baby. ā¤ļø

I don’t blame the older piggies for getting fed up sometimes haha, helps to keep the babies in line! So far I’ve only seen Tofu really tell Ed off once, and it was a big rumble and a chase out of the hidey when Tofu was napping and Ed was zooming around him

Otherwise he’s been quite happy for Ed to snatch food from his mouth and follow him everywhere. Tofu has always been a gentle, chilled out boar (well since he turned three anyway - he was actually very skittish the first year I had him)

Aw I love hearing about your piggies over the years ā¤ļø it must be extra special when you see similar characteristics coming back over time. Ed is reminding me of Noodle (Tofu’s litter mate) too, not in looks but character - very curious and wanting to get into everything, especially places he shouldn’t

Tofu is the happiest I’ve seen him in a while. Relaxed and at peace. More mobile too with chasing a baby around which must be good for his back legs

Upon examination, Edamame has three white paws and only that front left one is chocolate brown. That’s going to make future nail trims much easier! He has a little white stripe and patches of ginger on his tummy too. 256g today šŸ˜

He is just so cute! I am glad that Tofu agrees and is very happy and more active again.

It’s so lovely for Tofu, you and your OH ….youve had a hard time just lately so some laughter, fun and joy is lovely and it’s great we get to share too ā¤ļøā¤ļø

This is all so heartwarming ā™„ļøā™„ļøā™„ļøā™„ļøā™„ļøā™„ļø

Thank you both ā¤ļø it has been rough lately. I wasn’t prepared for losing two piggies within six months (Noodle and Patches) and it knocked Tofu as well, he was not doing well alone. It was for him that I was contacting rescues faster than I probably would have chosen to, but finding Ed is bringing a lot of joy back. It’s impossible not to love his little face šŸ˜ and Tofu is SO happy with him around

Ed really does look like a rat, a little!

Haha he does! My OH and I keep saying he looks like a mouse at the moment, like he hasn’t quite grown into his features

Eddie takes pellets from my hand now šŸ˜ he’ll snatch veggies too before running off with them. Lettuce is his favourite so far. Tofu continues to act as if all his christmases have come at once

Showing off Ed’s colouring (he might be agouti? He looks a lot more ginger in person along with the lovely chocolate brown)

I moved one water bottle a rung lower for Ed, thinking he’d be too small for Tofu’s height

Instead Tofu has been drinking from the small one, contorting his head around to fit it. Then staring grumpily at me. He has a second one at the normal height but ignores it

Then today I saw Ed drinking from the taller one! He has to fully turn his head upside down to do it, daft boy

They’re ridiculous and refuse to take the easiest option so I’m just gonna put them both back at normal height šŸ˜‚
